Service bulletins for the 2016 Mazda CX-9

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

01-001-232023-02-02. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. Some customers may complain about a poor acceleration and rough idling or the CHECK ENGINE light ON with DTC P030X:00 (only turbo engines are applicable; non-turbo engines are NOT applicable). - In most cases, P030X is stored, but sometimes not. - Sometimes the CHECK ENGINE light does not recognize this engine concern. This is caused by the variable valve in the exhaust manifold seizing and causing the exhaust port to become hot and the exhaust valve seat to wear unevenly, resulting in compression leakage. To eliminate this concern, the design of the exhaust manifold has been modified.
SA-003/232023-02-02. Service bulletin. SERVICE BRAKES. Some vehicles exhibit brake related concerns such as brake noise, brake judder or brake dragging. If you encounter a customer complaint for any one of these symptoms, refer to the following information to understand why symptoms may occur, and to better assist the customer in resolving their specific brake concern.
RF-23-012023-02-02. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. When servicing SKYACTIV engine vehicles requiring to replace the Oil Galley Plug and Crush Washer, order the required part numbers below. These parts are not listed in GEPC and were previously listed as "non-serviceable" in the cylinder block diagram.
04-005-222023-01-05. Service bulletin. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC. Front Brake Noise Symptom 1: Some vehicles may exhibit a click noise when first moving forward or reverse from a stop OR when first applying the brakes while moving forward at slow speeds. This is caused by deteriorated grease between the brake pads and the shim, the front brake pads move upward/downward along with the brake rotors during brake application. When the vehicle moves or the brakes are applied the next time, the front brake pads move to the other side, which causes a click noise. Front Brake Noise Symptom 2: Some vehicles may exhibit the brakes having an unusual noise or vibration when applying the brake. This is caused by rust on the brake disc plate’s surface. Rear Brake Noise Symptom 1: Some vehicles may exhibit grooves in rear brake disc plate(s). This concern is mostly found on new or low mileage vehicles, when the brakes are new. The grooves may be caused through abrasion from the accumulation of metal particles from the rear brake disc plates. The metal particles get caught between the brake pads and disc plates causing groove damage. To eliminate this concern, the disc plate surface honing process has been changed to reduce metal particle formation. Rear Brake Noise Symptom 2: Some vehicles equipped with an electric parking brake (EPB) may exhibit a grinding noise from the rear brakes when braking. This may be caused by the rear brake pads not having the capability to remove the rust from the rear brake discs. This is caused by rust on the brake disc plate’s surface. NOTE: The red rust accumulated on the discs is exposed to high temperatures during braking, and consequently the rust turns black. As the black rust is too hard to be removed by the brake pads, the rust progress is accelerated, resulting in the grinding noise.
SA-078-222023-01-05. Service bulletin. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC. Some vehicles exhibit brake related concerns such as brake noise, brake judder or brake dragging. If you encounter a customer complaint for any one of these symptoms, refer to the following information to understand why symptoms may occur, and to better assist the customer in resolving their specific brake concern.

SA-075-222022-12-02. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. If you encounter any type of electrical concern (e.g, dead battery, engine no start, DTC(s) stored...), interview the customer before proceeding with normal MGSS diagnosis by asking if any aftermarket devices have been installed. Aftermarket devices may be the cause of the electrical concern. Below are a few examples of unusual electrical concerns caused by aftermarket devices. Examples: 1. Devices connected to the DLC-2 (battery discharge/DTC stored) 2. Cell phone charger/accessory in 12V socket (engine no start or unable to turn off) 3. GPS tracking device (engine no start/battery discharge) 4. Dash cam (DTC stored) 5. Non-certified USB cable (Apple Carplay™/ Android Auto™ will not connect) 6. Over-sized wheels/tires (incorrect GPS location)
SA-074-222022-12-02. Service bulletin. VISIBILITY:DEFROSTER/DEFOGGER/HVAC SYSTEM; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. Some customers may complain the HVAC system not maintaining the correct temperature or the ambient (outside) temperature reading incorrectly. This is caused by a failure in the ambient temperature sensor. To correct this issue, the ambient temperature sensor has been modified.
09-018-22b2022-12-02. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. Some vehicles may experience the symptoms mentioned below, which can be fixed with the latest software update (Version 74.00.324 or later). The system performance has been improved as follows: Ver. 74.00.324 fixes these software errors (bugs): * If the shift lever is operated quickly while displaying the CarPlayTM screen, the rear view screen may not return to the CarPlayTM screen. * When the gear position is shifted into P from R, the screen may not return to the previous condition before shifting into the R position.
02-004-22a2022-12-02. Service bulletin. SUSPENSION. Some customers may complain of signs of oil on the struts or shock absorbers. In most cases the oil that is present is normal, and a result of the oil that remains on the shaft during the normal sweeping process of the shaft seal. Follow the inspection guidelines below to determine if the condition is a result of the normal sweeping process or a failure of the shaft seal.
07-003-22a2022-11-04. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT. Some customers may complain about poor A/C performance due to low refrigerant. This may be caused by one of two things. Cause 1: [For 2016-2022 CX-9 with VINS lower than JM3TC******617612 (produced before April 7, 2022)] The condenser is corroded causing leakage of the A/C refrigerant. To eliminate this concern, the anti-corrosion performance of the condenser tube has been improved. Cause 2: [For all 2016-2022 CX-9] The low-temperature side outlet pipe leading to the evaporator of the air conditioner condenser has deteriorated because the structure around the outlet pipe on the low-temperature side of the air conditioner condenser allows mud and salt water to adhere easily. There is no mass production change, but an improved condenser was designed as needed.
SA-068-222022-11-04. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN. The new SKYACTIV-DRIVE FW6A-EL AT uses "Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Type: FZ". Only use "ATF-FZ" to fill or top off the fluid level. ATF-FZ is specially designed for use in the SKYACTIV-DRIVE series AT. It is a low viscosity formula with less friction for better fuel economy. NOTE: ATF-FZ is colored blue for easy identification.
SA-066-222022-11-04. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. Some vehicles may have one of the following DTCs stored in memory along with a system status notice on the Multi-information display OR display a system status notice with no DTC: * C1001:92 - Forward sensing camera (FSC) poor field of view [Gen 6 vehicles] * B14F0:92 - General temporary failure in forward sensing camera (FSC) [Gen 7 vehicles built on or before March 2, 2019] * No DTC - Warning Message only [Gen 7 vehicles built after March 2, 2019] DTC C1001:92 or B14F0:92 set as a past record for low visibility of the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC). It does not mean there is an actual FSC defect. * In some cases the customer may have a concern with the Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and/or High Beam Control system (HBC). * In other cases this DTC might be found without a related customer concern. NOTE: In most cases, no dealer visit is necessary.
SA-008-22a2022-11-04. Service bulletin. STRUCTURE. Some vehicles may experience exterior trim heat damage when parked near a glass building or Low-E windows. This may be caused by the sun's reflection.
01-010-222022-10-06. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN. Some customers may experience a squeaking noise may be heard from the exhaust manifold when the idle speed drops from fast idle to normal idle speed during cold start. This is caused by a variable valve being stuck in the closed position. When returning from fast idle to normal, the stuck valve suddenly opens due to thermal change around it which causes abnormal noise. To eliminate this concern, the internal design of the exhaust manifold has been modified.
07-003-222022-09-06. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT. Some customers may complain about poor A/C performance due to low refrigerant. This may be caused by the low-temperature side outlet pipe leading to the evaporator of the air conditioner condenser deteriorating because the structure around the outlet pipe on the low-temperature side of the air conditioner condenser allows mud and salt water to adhere easily. There is no mass production change, but an improved condenser was designed as needed.

01-007-222022-07-06. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. Some vehicles may have coolant leaks at the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold (as shown below). There may be cracks at the stud bolt hole or at the outside of the exhaust manifold. Cracks may be caused by: - Deformation of the exhaust manifold during usage causing unexpected force to certain areas of the cylinder head. - Residual stress generated during production in the cylinder head material may be greater than expected. The external force from the exhaust system when driving over bumps may cause unexpected force to certain areas of the cylinder head. To eliminate this concern, the design of the exhaust manifold gasket and the cylinder head has been modified to reduce the force on the cylinder head.
