Service bulletins for the 2016 BMW X5

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

364 on file from NHTSA, as of 2026-10-19.

B6301172018-11-05. Service bulletin. EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS. "?SERVICE ACTION: TARGETED ILLUMINATION - REPROGRAM CONTROL UNITS . Affected vehicles need to have control units reprogrammed. CCM (Check Control Message) ""Dynamic Light Spot has failed"" for left or right side. Stepper motors in the targeted illumination headlights can become non-functional at their stop limit."
B6103172018-11-05. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. "CHANGE TO PHEV HV BATTERY CELL MODULES. INFORMATION There has been a change to all Generation 3 PHEV high-voltage (HV) battery cell modules. The number of temperatures sensors on the cell modules has decreased from 4 sensors to 3 sensors. This change has to be taken into account when replacing a component within the HV battery that requires the charging or discharging of a cell module with the Deutronic DBL1200HV-60 cell module charger. When connecting the cell module to the charger the number of temperature sensors (NTC's) will need to be changed to 3 for the charger to charge the module correctly. Refer to the DBL1200HV-60 manual for more information (Attached). To verify how many temperature sensors are on the cell module use the ""Diagnosis"" function of the DBL1200HV-60 cell module charger. The example to the right shows 3 temperature sensors. The message ""ZKS not connected"" will be displayed if the incorrect amount of temperature sensors (NTC's) is selected."
B5127162018-11-05. Service bulletin. STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE. ?RATTLE/ POPPING FROM REAR HATCH AREA . There are two related but separate issues (only one may be present at a time) during driving, especially on uneven surfaces: A. Clicking noises or squeaking noises from the area of the rear hatch. Or B. A popping sound coming from the area of the rear hatch. Bump stop height: A. Situation A - settling of the bump stops over time allows vibration, rattle of the hatch. B. Situation B - the bump stops may be adjusted too high, putting torsional stress on the hatch, causing flexing (popping) noises.
B2401172018-11-05. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION; POWER TRAIN. "?AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DRIVEABILITY COMPLAINTS . Hesitant drive off, sluggish driving behavior. The Automatic Transmission (AT) switches into emergency mode and operates only in first gear, Manual shifting (+/-) in Sport Program (using both gear selector and/or shift paddles) is not possible. 44E257 - ""N6 speed sensor: Direction of rotation invalid"" is stored in transmission control module Transmission Control Unit (GKEG3HY) software"
B1803102018-11-05. Service bulletin. ENGINE; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM. "? NO REGENERATION OF THE DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF) This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B18 03 10 dated November 2010. . The Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated. The following fault codes may be stored in the DDE: N47T/N57T engine 245700 - Particle filter system: particulate filter highly loaded (Exhaust backpressure high) 245800 - particle filter system - filter is heavily contaminated. (exhaust backpressure is above maximum) M57Y engine 480A Particle filter system - filter is heavily contaminated. (exhaust backpressure is too high) 481A Particle filter system - filter is heavily contaminated. (exhaust backpressure is above maximum) CAUSE 1. Faults with the exhaust system that affect the monitoring of the DPF by the DDE 2. Unfavorable recent driving profile INFORMATIOM During normal driving, there is a continuous regeneration of the diesel particulate filter that takes place at exhaust-gas temperatures between 280 and 350°C (slower oxidation process). The soot particles can only be burned off when the required exhaust-gas temperature has been reached. Under certain driving conditions (i.e., prolonged short trips or an exhaust system which never reaches soot burn-off temperatures), the DPF can become restricted. The DDE will initiate periodic regeneration automatically, at the latest after 600 miles. In vehicles making many short distance journeys, periodic regeneration takes place after only 250-500 miles. The Digital Diesel Electronics control unit evaluates the time for periodic regeneration from the following values: average distance driven average driving speed temperature in the diesel particulate filter values from the exhaust pressure sensor The DDE initiates the regeneration process by decreasing incoming air by the throttle valve, and one or two post injections are executed. This heats the exhaust-gas temperature to approx. 600° C . When the exhaust temp reaches this point: The soot is burned off with the residual oxygen. The
B1801172018-11-05. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM; ENGINE. "? DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF) CLEANING . The following performance issues may be noticed by the customer: CC-Message ""Drive faulty"" Engine jerking or a lack of power over the whole engine speed range Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is illuminated The following fault codes may be stored in the DDE: N47T/N57T engine Main Faults: 245700 - Particle filter system: particulate filter highly loaded (Exhaust backpressure high) 258300 - Exhaust backpressure sensor, Signal: Signal too high Secondary Faults: 244C00 - Charging pressure control, control deviation: charging pressure too low/positive deviation 25DA00 - Exhaust gas difference pressure sensor particle filter, Signal: short circuit to plus pole M57Y engine Main Faults: 480A particle filter system 481A particle filter system Secondary Faults: 4530 charging pressure control, control deviation 429A charging pressure control low pressure stage, control deviation Clogged DPF."

DIAGNOSING NON FUNCTIONING ""eDRIVE"" This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B12 27 16 dated November 2016. The customer complains that the vehicle will not go into ""eDrive"", and in some cases ""eDrive"" is greyed-out in the control display (CID) and is not selectable. Also, there are no pertinent electric drivetrain fault codes that assist with diagnosis. Possible 12 volt battery failure, Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) failure or MSA deactivation."
B1121162018-11-05. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM; ENGINE. "?CCM: ""START/STOP FAILED"": LOSS OF POWER . Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is illuminated Check Control Message (CCM) states ""Auto Start/Stop function failed"" One or more of the following codes may be stored in the DME fault memory' 120408: ""Charging pressure control: switching off as a subsequent reaction"" 130F20: ""Exhaust camshaft: angular offset to crankshaft outside of tolerance"" 130E20: ""Intake camshaft: angular offset to crankshaft outside of tolerance"" 164040: ""Intake camshaft: Installation faulty"" 164041: ""Exhaust camshaft: Installation faulty"" Incorrect camshafts timing position (in reference to crankshaft). Combustions occurring just as engine is stopping, drive the engine backwards, dragging the belt drive and toothed belt starter motor backwards. High-inertia torque loading on the camshaft sprockets and crankshaft at this point causes slippage, unintentionally adjusting the timing."
