Service bulletins for the 2016 BMW X5

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

364 on file from NHTSA, as of 2026-10-19.

The decision to phase out 3G network technology was made at the discretion of the respective cellular carriers and lies beyond the control of BMW. Due to the phase-out, BMW Assist and ConnectedDrive services will no longer be supported after this date.
B6507092020-08-31. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE. NAVIGATION SYSTEM - REPORTING MISSING OR INCORRECT ROADMAP DATA: Do not replace parts and do not program the vehicle. Roads can change by up to 15% every year. To ensure the best navigation experience, we do everything in our power to create the best maps. Your reports help us to detect changes in your area and keep future versions of our maps as accurate as possible. Therefore, a road map error or missing data must be reported directly to the map supplier.
B1210182019-07-22. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE. MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL): IHKA FC 801386 This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B12 10 18 dated April 2018.
B6104192019-05-20. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; ENGINE; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY; EQUIPMENT:OTHER:OWNERS/SERVICE/OTHER MANUAL. VEHICLE DOES NOT START BATTERY TOTALLY DISCHARGED This Service Information bulletin replaces SI B61 04 19 dated March 2019.
B6119182019-02-25. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; EQUIPMENT. STANDARD OCCASIONAL USE CABLE - CHARGING COMPLAINT TROUBLESHOOTING.
B3702142018-12-10. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; SUSPENSION. Service Action: Program Variable Damper Control (VDC) Unit. Unfavorable tolerances for the plug-in connections of the wheel acceleration sensors may result in fault code memory entries and the VDC being deactivated. If the VDC control unit identifies an implausable value from one of the wheel acceleration sensors, the VDC will be deactivated and the driver is informed by a Check Control message. The vehicle then defaults to the conventional suspension.
B6604162018-12-10. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE. """Comfort Access Restricted"" Check Control Message is Displayed. ""Comfort Access Restricted"" CCM (Check Control Message) is permanently displayed.. The CCM ID: D0h. The comfort access is functioning correctly. No comfort access aerial fault codes stored in the BDC (Body Domain Controller). Software error in the BDC"
B6205162018-12-10. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE. Head-up Display is no Longer Visible. HUD (Head-up Display) adjusted to the lowest position is no longer visible. Software in the instrument cluster.
B1301162018-12-10. Service bulletin. FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE); ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:DIESEL. The DDE software application for exhaust gas recirculation control (EGR) does not favorably match the diesel fuel grades available in many parts of the US market. The high pressure EGR cooler could become filled with soot particulate to the point that exhaust gas flow and cooling efficiency are significantly reduced. This could result in the Service Engine Soon light coming on with EGR control / Air mass faults being stored in the DDE.
B6214152018-12-10. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE. Instrument Cluster Multifunction Display Intermittently Blank . Some information displays in the Instrument Cluster (KOMBI) may intermittently go blank. This may include the tachometer and speedometer displays. There is a software error in the KOMBI.
B6201162018-12-10. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE. "Vehicles which have had the Instrument Cluster (KOMBI) replaced may display incorrect CBS (Condition Based Service) data after programming. AFFECTED VEHICLES Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as ""Open"" when checked either in the ""Service Menu"" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader. Incorrect SW calibration loaded after KOMBI replacement."
B1223152018-11-05. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL. "Reduced Engine Power with ""Charging Pressure Too High"" Faults Stored. When accelerating under certain conditions, the engine power may be reduced and a Check Control Message (CCM) ""Drive Faulty; Drive at moderate speed"" is displayed. The following charging pressure control fault is stored in the DME: ? Fault 120208: Exhaust camshaft sensor, signal: not plausible As a result, the engine power is reduced, and the following faults may also be set: ? Fault 120408: Charging pressure control: Switch-off, pressure build-up blocked ? Fault 120908: Charging pressure control2: Switch-off, pressure build-up blocked CAUSE DME software error"
B1221142018-11-05. Service bulletin. FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:FUEL GAUGE SYSTEM; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE. Engine Malfunction Warning Illuminated with FC 193208: Fuel Level Plausibility Stored in DME. The customer states that the engine malfunction warning lamp is illuminated, and while filling the fuel tank, the fuel gauge did not show the proper fill level. After the vehicle is driven a short distance, the fuel gauge will update to full. When diagnosed, the following fault is stored in the DME: ? FC 193208 Fuel level, plausibility: deviation between consumption and level change Please proceed to the Procedure section. Vehicles with option 610 (Head-Up Display) are not affected. Please follow the ISTA/D test plan for the applicable faults stored in the DME, including the one listed in this bulletin. CAUSE A software error in the instrument cluster causes the fuel gauge to incorrectly update while refilling. The error occurs when the vehicle is powered up after refilling.

Volume of audio system (when set to near maximum) is reduced when Auto Start-Stop (MSA) stop occurs and is not restored upon automatic engine restart. This is normal system behavior - serves to protect the head unit, battery drain and avoidance of incremental leaps in the loudness. The loudness is reduced to 2/3 of maximum and is not restored. Note: Air conditioning output is also reduced upon MSA stop and is not restored for similar reasons.
