Service bulletins for the 2016 MINI Cooper Convertible
A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

| M650116 | 2019-02-25. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:RADIO/TAPE DECK/CD ETC.. XM Satellite Radio Reception. INFORMATION Currently Satellite Radio is provided by SiriusXM for MINI customers. SiriusXM is the only company currently broadcasting Satellite Radio in North America. Satellite radio was broadcast from two different sets of Satellites using different earth orbits. XM uses geosynchronous (GEO) satellites located roughly above the equator. This means that the satellite signal to some parts of the United States can come in at an angle as low as 32 degrees to the horizon. This is different than Sirius Satellites in a Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO) which came in to the vehicle at a higher angle to the horizon. As of April 2016 Sirius equipped head units moved to the XM Satellites constellation and now show the same location based cutouts. |

| M640216 | 2018-12-10. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT; EQUIPMENT:APPLIANCE:AIR CONDITIONER. Air Conditioning Refrigerant R1234yf Introduction. INFORMATION Several precautions need to be observed when working on automotive air conditioning systems: Always wear eye protection and gloves while handling refrigerant or servicing air conditioning system. Avoid breathing R1234yf lubricant vapor or mist. Use only approved service equipment to discharge A/C systems. If refrigerant or compressor oil contacts the skin or eyes, large quantities of cool water should be used to flush the affected area. Never heat a refrigerant container with an open flame. Keep all refrigerant away from open flames. Under no circumstances should R1234yf service equipment or vehicle A/C systems be pressure tested or leak tested with air/R1234yf mixtures. NOTE: The use of compressed air (shop air) for leak detection in an R1234yf system can contaminate the system and/or refrigerant with moisture. Leak detection equipment that meets the SAE J2791 standard will work with R1234yf Never use fittings for an R12 or R134a system on an R1234yf system. Any difficulty in connecting service equipment may be an indication of refrigerant/equipment incompatibility with the vehicle's system. Always carefully ascertain the type of refrigerant used in the vehicle's system before performing service. Labels on underside of hood, will detail which refrigerant is used in the air conditioning system. Service the vehicle with compatible recycling equipment ONLY. Attempts to adapt and use incompatible service tools will destroy both the vehicle's air conditioning system and the service tool. Never use any R-12/R134a service tools on R1234yf systems. Tools, such as manifold gauge sets, retain small amounts of refrigerant and lubricant. Attempting to use the same equipment on both R-12/R134a and R1234yf vehicles will contaminate the air conditioning systems. Obtain and use the correct type of refrigerant recovery/recycling machine. Follow the directions included in the machine's instruction manual. WARR |
| M120815 | 2018-12-10. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT. "INFORMATION Covered under the terms of the MINI New Passenger Car Limited Warranty or the MINI NEXT Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty. This repair is also covered by the terms of the State-specific Emissions Warranty (dependent on the vehicle's model year, state of registration and its inclusion on the ""model-specific"" list of covered components). The MINI NEXT Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty applies to MINI vehicles that have and are still within the MINI NEXT Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty coverage period, but beyond the Emissions Warranty coverage that applies. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead. Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances. Vehicle Programming and Coding Control module failures that occur during programming: Please claim these consequential repairs under the defect code listed in this bulletin and use the applicable KSD2 labor operations. Other Repairs Control module failures that occur prior to programming: When covered under an applicable limited warranty, claim these repairs using the applicable defect code and labor operations in KSD2. | M651315 | 2018-12-10. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:RADIO/TAPE DECK/CD ETC.. Hissing noise from speakers when radio volume is turned down. There is an audible hissing noise from the speakers when there is no active audio source. This noise is most apparent with the engine and climate system fan turned off. Software in the HK HiFi amplifier. |
| M650516 | 2018-12-10. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:RADIO/TAPE DECK/CD ETC.. Sporadic Failure of Different Audio Channels. Intermittently, different speakers may be inoperative during an entire drive cycle until the vehicle enters sleep mode and the vehicle is restarted. CAUSE Shut-down of output circuit(s) from pressure variations caused by door shutting during diagnostic self-test. After unlocking the vehicle the Harman/Kardon (HK) Amplifier goes into a speaker self-test mode. If a door is slammed during this self-test vibrating the speaker cone, the HK amplifier may interpret the changing resistance of the speaker as a circuit failure. The HK Amplifier will then go into protection mode and turn off the output transistor(s) for the particular speaker(s) until the next selftest which is performed after the next sleep cycle. |
| M650316 | 2018-12-10. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:RADIO/TAPE DECK/CD ETC.. NBT and Entry Head Unit Software Update for Improved Satellite Radio Reception. Poor Satellite Radio reception CAUSE After this software update there is a slight improvement in Satellite Radio reception for these vehicles when receiving their signal from XM Satellites. This is due to the changeover from Sirius Satellite broadcasting to XM Satellite broadcasting in 2016 (See SI M65 01 16). |
| M650216 | 2018-12-10. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:ANTI-THEFT DEVICES. False Alarms of the Anti-Theft Alarm System. The alarm (DWA) siren continues to activate after locking vehicle A device is connected to the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) port of the vehicle. This keeps the Ethernet communication line active which triggers the alarm when the vehicle tries to enter sleep mode. |

INFORMATION Highlights of R-1234yf Meets SAE J2888_201301 ""This SAE Standard covers fittings, couplers, and hoses intended for connecting service hoses from mobile air- conditioning Systems to service equipment such as charging, recovery and recycling equipment"". New tools and equipment are required. To service vehicles equipped with R-1234yf refer to SI M04 01 16. Air conditioning technician certification is required to work on system. Refer to your State Law. Unique low and high side fittings. Revised evaporator core as per SAE J2842. System will use about 5% more refrigerant than a comparable R134a system. System oil is a specific PAG oil. Refer to ISTA repair recommendation. Do not interchange components between systems using other refrigerants. Do not reuse Seals / O-ring material from another system. The system piping has internal heat exchangers (IHX or IWT). SAFETY INFORMATION Several precautions need to be observed when working on automotive air conditioning systems: Always wear eye protection and gloves while handling refrigerant or servicing air conditioning system.
