Starting with the 2013 model year, Full Size Trucks and Utilities now have Powertrain Grade Braking. Powertrain grade braking assists when driving on a downhill grade to help maintain desired vehicle speed by using the engine and transmission to slow the vehicle.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician with the steps on diagnosing and repairing vehicles that may have unwanted grade braking, reduced engine power with no Driver Information Center messages ? Brake Pedal Override Feature ?, transmission busy or frequent shifting up or down, and Diagnostic Trouble Codes P057B, P057C, and/or P057D may or may not be set. Technician will use this preliminary information to find the brake pedal position data parameters in the scan tool, and also to provide some additional diagnostic help. These issues may be caused by an incorrect brake pedal position sensor input to the engine control module. Technician will verify with the scan tool if the engine control module has the correct parameters for the brake pedal position sensor. If an engine control module brake pedal position sensor relearn is performed, the truck may be temporarily repaired until the intermittent wiring issue between the engine control module and brake pedal position sensor occurs again. On 2014 and newer trucks inspect and repair any damage to X115 and X119. On the 2014 and previous trucks inspect and repair any damage to X205.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that may have a delayed engagement into drive, shudder at a launch, or the transmission is slipping when shifting into 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th gears. This may be due to loose stator support to pump cover bolts causing a leak at the stator support to pump cover gasket. Technician will check for the bolts to be loose. If any of the bolts are loose or the gasket is misaligned or leaking, the transmission pump cover must be replaced and the 1234 clutch plates should be inspected for being distressed and repaired as needed.
PIP5337H2017-08-15. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION; POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:TORQUE CONVERTER. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on the step to diagnose and repair the vehicles that may have a shake or shudder during light throttle acceleration, between 30 and 65 miles per hour steady state driving. Also shudder feeling that may be described as driving over rumble strips or rough pavement. Technician will need to run the vehicle in three different operational modes. The three modes are Normal, torque converter clutch open, and torque converter clutch closed. Technician will need to press and hold the tow-haul mode button for five seconds to disable grade braking to prevent downshifts during test. Technician will need to duplicate the concern in Normal mode. If the concern is gone in torque converter clutch open and closed then the torque converter should be replaced. If the concern is not present in normal mode, torque converter clutch open, and torque converter clutch closed the concern is not with the shudder. Technician should use of the PICO scope and Noise, Vibration and Harshness software can be used to confirm torque converter clutch shudder, Engine, Tire or Driveline component related conditions. Flush the cooler lines and cooler using DT-45096 transmission oil cooling system flush and flow test tool when the torque converter is replace.

TECHNICIAN WILL VERIFY WITH THE SCAN TOOL IF THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE HAS THE CORRECT PARAMETERS FOR THE BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR. IF AN ENGINE CONTROL MODULE BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR RELEARN IS PERFORMED, THE TRUCK MAY BE TEMPORARILY REPAIRED UNTIL THE INTERMITTENT WIRING ISSUE BETWEEN THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE AND BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR OCCURS AGAIN. ON 2014 AND NEWER TRUCKS INSPECT AND REPAIR ANY DAMAGE TO X115 AND X119. ON THE 2014 AND PREVIOUS TRUCKS INSPECT AND REPAIR ANY DAMAGE TO X205.

IF THE SHUDDER IS ONLY PRESENT IN 4 CYLINDER MODE AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SLIP IS 10 RPM OR LESS DEEM THE SHUDDER CONCERN NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT. IF THE SLIP SPEED IS BEYOND 10 RPM OR THERE IS SHUDDER DURING TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH APPLY THE TORQUE CONVERTER WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.

INSPECT THRUST BEARING FOR WEAR ON ONE SIDE AND CRANKSHAFT ON THAT “MATING” SURFACE. IF THE THRUST BEARING HAS THREE VERTICAL CHANNELS WORN OFF REPLACE CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS, MAIN BEARINGS, THRUST BEARING AND CRANKSHAFT. IF WORKING ON A CORVETTE THE OIL TANK WITH LINES AND OIL COOLER ARE BOTH REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED IF EQUIPPED.
