2021-04-09. Seats And Restraints. Issue: On certain vehicles, the flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the outboard side of the driver's seat may have been replaced with an incorrect part during a previous repair. Over time, this cable could flex and may eventually break. If this happens, the seat belt could detach in a crash. Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles that had the driver's seat belt pretensioner replaced after a previous recall repair (recall 2016-153 or 2018-233). Safety Risk: A seat belt that detaches in a crash could increase the risk of injury. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the driver's outboard seat belt pretensioner assembly.
2021-02-05. Airbag. Issue: On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective Action: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the passenger-front airbag. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.
2019-10-24. Brakes. Issue: On certain vehicles, there may be an error in the electronic-brake control module software. This could cause the driveline-protection system to activate when a wheel-speed sensor fails. If this happens, the brakes could apply and cause the vehicle to pull to one side. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with four-wheel drive, a 5.3-L engine, and a 3.08 ratio rear axle. The problem can only occur when the vehicle is in four-wheel drive or automatic mode, and travelling at a speed between 66 and 97 km/h (41 and 60 mph). A wheel-speed sensor failure will cause the electronic stability control (ESC) and anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning lights to turn on, and a "Service StabiliTrak" message to display. Safety Risk: A vehicle that suddenly pulls to one side could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the electronic-brake control module software. General Motors advises that using two-wheel-drive mode can eliminate the risk until the recall repair is completed.
2019-08-21. Other. Issue: This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Safety Risk: Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Products affected by this recall have the designation “DOT 287” along with the lettering “VMR” (Replacement Market) and a date code that is before July 2019. This information is printed on the bottom corner of the glass. Consumers should contact Vitro's customer service at 1-412-995-6457 or argbacklites@vitro.com to arrange for replacement of the glass.
2019-06-28. Electrical. Issue: On certain trucks equipped with a power sliding rear window, the rear defroster circuit could overheat. This could cause melting, smoke or, in rare instances, a fire. Safety Risk: A fire could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your truck to a dealer to replace the covers for the buss bar and contacts for the rear sliding window. If the rear window or sliding glass assembly are damaged due to a problem with the rear defroster, they will also be replaced.
2019-06-28. Brakes. Issue: On certain vehicles, there could be a reduction in power brake assist due to a decrease in output from the vacuum pump. This could cause a hard brake pedal and an increase in brake pedal effort to stop the vehicle. Safety Risk: A sudden increase in brake pedal force could lead to an increase in stopping distance. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to reprogram the electronic brake control module.
2017-10-20. Fuel System. On certain vehicles equipped with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks, the fuel level sensor in the front tank could become stuck in the low level position, causing the rear tank to overfill the front tank. If this occurs, the front tank could expand and come in contact with the moving drive shaft which, over time, could create a hole in the front tank and cause a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the rear tank fuel pump module or flash the vehicle software. Dealers will also inspect the front tank for damage and replace it as necessary.
2017-07-10. Airbag. On certain vehicles, the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), which controls airbag and pretensioner deployment, contains a software defect which may prevent the deployment of frontal airbags and pretensioners in certain circumstances. Failure of frontal airbags and seatbelt pretensioners to deploy in a crash (when warranted) could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will reflash the SDM with new software. In vehicles with any previous deployment events recorded in the SDM, the dealers will replace the existing SDM with a new SDM containing the latest software.
2017-06-29. Steering. Certain vehicles may experience a temporary loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist followed by a sudden return of EPS assist, particularly during low-speed turning manoeuvres due to an electrical/software issue. If EPS assist is lost and suddenly returned, the unexpected change in steering effort could affect vehicle control, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will update the EPS module software. Note: If power steering assist is lost and the vehicle reverts to manual steering, a dash message would be displayed stating there is an EPS problem. Additionally, this issue could also affect radio, stabilitrak, the driver information centre, chime, door-lock, air conditioning, and/or cruise control function.
2016-09-09. Note: This recall affects 2014-2017 model year Sierra LD/Silverado LD models and 2015-2016 model year Sierra HD/Silverado HD model vehicles.
2016-04-11. Seats And Restraints. On certain Sierra 1500 and Silverado 1500 vehicles, the flexible steel cable that connects the driver's seat belt to the vehicle structure at the outboard position can fatigue over time and could separate, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. Correction: Dealers will enlarge the side shield opening, install a pusher bracket on the tensioner and, if necessary, replace the tensioner assembly.
2015-10-08. Electrical. On certain vehicles, a defect in the ignition lock actuator may make turning the ignition key difficult or cause the key to get stuck in the “start” position. This may be more likely to occur at higher interior ambient temperatures. If the vehicle is driven with the key stuck in the “start” position, and the vehicle experiences a significant jarring event or the vehicle’s interior temperature cools, the ignition key could move out of the “start” position, rotate past the “run” position, and move into the “accessory” position, causing the engine to shut off. This would result in a loss of motive power and affect power steering and power brake system function, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. The timing of the key movement out of the “run” position, relative to the activation of the sensing algorithm in a crash event, may also result in the airbags not deploying in a subsequent collision, increasing the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the ignition lock housing.
2014-10-03. Electrical. On certain vehicles, the chassis electronic module may have been contaminated at time of manufacture, which could cause an electrical short to occur within the module. This could cause the vehicle's check engine light to be displayed, or cause the engine to fail to start or stall, resulting in a loss of motive power. If the vehicle is equipped to support electric trailer brakes, the vehicle could also lose trailer brake function and display a "Service Trailer Brake System" indicator. These issues could increase the risk of a crash resulting in injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the module with a revised part.
2014-07-29. Seats And Restraints. On certain vehicles, the hook bracket assembly for either front seat may have been manufactured with an incomplete weld. If the weld is incomplete and the assembly is exposed to a high load condition, the hook may separate from the seat track. This could increase the risk of occupant injury during a crash. Correction: Dealers will inspect the weld, and if necessary, replace the lower seat track.
2014-06-27. Powertrain. Certain vehicles equipped with an Automatic Transfer Case may have a condition in which an electric signal short may cause the transfer case to switch to neutral without operator input. The transfer case mode selection knob would still indicate the last selected drive mode, but the driver would not have any feedback that the transfer case is in neutral. If the transfer case switches to neutral while the vehicle is in motion, the driver would experience a loss of motive power and, if the vehicle is parked without the parking brake applied, the vehicle could roll away. Both scenarios could result in a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will re-program the software of the Transfer Case Control Module.
2014-06-06. Accessories. Certain vehicles equipped with a base radio and internal amplifier may fail to conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 114 - Theft Protection and Rollaway Protection, and CMVSS 208 - Occupant Crash Protection. The radio may become inoperative, causing a no-chime condition and disabling the audible warning if the key is in the ignition and the driver’s door is opened, or if a front outboard seat belt is not buckled. A loss of the seat belt audible warning may increase the likelihood of a front outboard occupant being unbelted, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. Similarly, the loss of an audible warning when a key is left in the ignition may increase the risk of vehicle theft. Correction: Dealers are to program the radio with updated software.
2014-06-04. Airbag. On certain vehicles, an internal fault in the Sensing and Diagnostic Module may set a diagnostic trouble code, illuminating the airbag warning lamp and disabling the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners for the duration of the drive cycle. This could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Correction: Not applicable. NOTE: Further analysis has shown that no defect existed in the Sensing and Diagnostic Module, and that this recall is therefore inactive.
2014-05-14. Steering. On certain vehicles, the tie rod threaded attachment to the steering gear rack may not have been tightened to specification. This could allow the tie rod to loosen and separate from the steering rack, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the inner tie rods for correct torque and replace the steering gear if necessary.
2014-03-31. Powertrain. On certain vehicles equipped with 6 speed automatic transmissions, transmission cooler lines may not have been securely seated in their fittings at time of assembly. This could result in a transmission fluid leak in proximity to hot surfaces which could increase the risk of a fire, potentially causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will inspect connections and repair as necessary.
2014-01-13. Engine. On certain 1500 series vehicles equipped with 4.3L and 5.3L engines, exhaust components may overheat while the vehicle is idling in cold temperatures. This could cause nearby plastic components to overheat and melt, possibly resulting in smoke and/or fire and increasing the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the engine control module.
2013-12-20. Powertrain. On certain HD model trucks equipped with an Allison A1000 Transmission, the dash display may not indicate the selected gear if the transmission shift lever is in the "1" position. If the driver is not aware of the position of the shift lever and attempts to accelerate only in first gear, it could increase the possibility of a crash without prior warning, which could result in properly damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will reflash the transmission control module.
2013-10-04. Seats And Restraints. Certain vehicles equipped with manual reclining seatbacks may not conform to Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 202 - Head Restraints. On some vehicles, either front seat may display seatback movement. If the vehicle were struck from behind, the head restraint may not meet the requirements of the standard, which could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect the seatback recliner mechanism and make adjustments as necessary.
2013-07-18. Airbag. On certain Crew Cab vehicles, welds on the passenger airbag inflator may fracture during airbag deployment, allowing some of the gases to vent behind the instrument panel instead of into the airbag. If this occurs, the airbag may not fully inflate. Failure of the passenger airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag assembly.
