Service bulletins for the 2016 Mazda MX-5

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

SA-009-202020-01-30. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING; STRUCTURE. LACK OF POWER UNDER HEAVY LOAD WITH NO WARNING LIGHTS OR DTCS: Some customers may complain of a lack of power under heavy load without any warning lights or DTCs. This concern may be due to a loose or detached hood weatherstrip, which can cause a blockage or restriction in the air intake system.
09-001-20-36702020-01-23. Service bulletin. SEATS; STRUCTURE. Some vehicles may exhibit scratches (1) on the rear of the seat back bar garnish (2) from contact with the convertible top (3).Due to assembly variations, the clearance between the seat back bar garnish and the convertible top is too small on some vehicles. On later 2016 models (starting with VINs JM1ND******117681), the link stopper of the convertible top has been changed to adjust the opening angle and folding position of the convertible top. This increased the gap between the seat back bar garnish and the convertible top when folded down. On these later models, the issue seems to occur if the customer does not completely lock the convertible top down when lowered. NOTE: Make the customer aware that the top needs to be completely locked down when lowered to prevent this from happening. With the convertible top lowered, press down on both the front and rear areas of the top (as shown with the arrows) until a latch sound is heard and the top does not pop up.
SA-040-192019-09-23. Service bulletin. STRUCTURE:BODY:HOOD; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. Some customers may complain of a lack of power under heavy load without any warning lights or DTCs. This concern may be due to a loose or detached hood weatherstrip, which can cause a blockage or restriction in the air intake system.
09-023-19-35962019-07-01. Service bulletin. STRUCTURE. Some vehicles (without inner cloth/headliner) may exhibit rubbing/contact marks on the top fabric of the convertible top around the area as shown. The marks may occur on the right and/or left side(s). This is caused by the top fabric receiving vibration and the stitching line (hard) touching the top fabric while the vehicle is running with the convertible top opened (top fabric folded and piled up). To correct this concern, the link stopper of the convertible top has been changed to adjust the opening angle of the convertible top, thereby decreasing the contact pressure applied to the top fabric when folded and piled up. NOTE: Compared to the top fabric with inner cloth, the top fabric without inner cloth is more likely to have this concern because the folded height is set lower, therefore the top fabric is folded and piled up in more tight condition.

09-011-19-35672019-03-11. Service bulletin. STRUCTURE:BODY:DOOR; VISIBILITY:GLASS, SIDE/REAR. Some vehicles may exhibit rust (A) on the front door quarter glass guide (B) where it contacts the door beltline molding (C). The paint on the quarter glass guide gets damaged from vibration when the door is closed and when driving. This concern is caused by the beltline molding contacting the quarter glass guide due to production variances. To correct this concern, a spacer has been attached at the contact area to assure an appropriate clearance between the beltline molding and the quarter glass guide.
MT-012-182019-03-04. Service bulletin. STRUCTURE:BODY; STEERING. If a vehicle has body vibration or steering wheel shimmy while driving and the root cause is determined to be tire balance, re-balance the tires using a Hunter GSP9700 or equivalent balance machine. If your dealer does not have a GSP9700 or equivalent balance machine, sublet the vehicle out for repair. To find the location of a GSP9700 near your dealer, visit Hunter?s web site at www.gsp9700.com and click on ?Locate a GSP9700 Road Force Balancer.?
09-021-18-3459a2018-11-13. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT; STRUCTURE. Some vehicles may experience stains appearing on the hood, roof and/or trunk of the vehicle. This concern is most likely to be found in a cold weather areas just after the RAPGARD is removed at PDI. This may becaused by moisture which has been trapped and condensed between the paint and the RAPGARD. These types of stains can be removed with a heat gun or an infrared drier. If you encounter this concern during PDI, use a heat gun or an infrared drier to apply heat to the affected area to remove the stain(s).

09-022-17-33402017-10-21. Service bulletin. STRUCTURE:BODY. Some vehicles may exhibit a squeak noise at the rear beltline when the door glass moves up and/or down. This concern happens especially when the door glass is wet with moisture or after a car wash. This is caused by stick-slip noise occurring at the contact surfaces between the door glass and the weather strip. With repeated moving up and down, the anti-noise paint on the weather strip peels off. To prevent the stick-slip noise, a polyester film has been attached at the applicable location of the weatherstrip.
09-020-17-33422017-10-21. Service bulletin. STRUCTURE:BODY:DOOR. 09-001-17-3296b2017-10-04. Service bulletin. EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS; STRUCTURE; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. When dealing with customer complaints of excessive condensation and/or water within the headlamp unit, first determine if all the bulb sockets (including O-ring), seals and covers are present and correctly installed. In most cases you will find that the Bulb Seal No. 1 (A) or HID Bulb Seal No. 1 (B) and Bulb Seal No. 2 (C) socket covers have not been correctly installed or are missing due to improper prior repairs (i.e., customer replacing the headlamp bulbs or body shop not transferring them when replacing the headlamp unit(s) due to a collision). Any damage caused by missing socket covers, HID module seal (D), or missing bumper brackets (E) is not covered by warranty policy.
09-045-15-3112A2017-06-08. Service bulletin. STRUCTURE:BODY:ROOF AND PILLARS. SOME VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT A RATTLE NOISE (A) FROM THE HEADER PANEL (B) OF THE CONVERTIBLE TOP WHEN DRIVING ON ROUGH ROADS. THE HEADER PANEL (A) IS FORMED BY TWO ALUMINUM PANELS, INNER (B) AND OUTER (C). WHEN RECEIVING AN INPUT FORCE BY DRIVING ON A ROUGH ROAD, THE TWO PANELS AT THE PROBLEM AREA, WHERE SPOT WELDS ARE LOCATED (D), MAY WARP AND CHANGE RELATIVE POSITION CAUSING THE RATTLING NOISE. (F=FRONT)TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, A SPOT WELD (E) HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE PROBLEM AREA, WHERE THE ORIGINAL SPOT WELDS ARE LOCATED (D), TO INCREASE THE RIGIDITY AND PREVENT THE WARPING.
SA2632017-03-02. Service bulletin. STRUCTURE. SOME VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT FOUR WEAR MARKS ON THE OUTER SURFACE OF THE SOFT TOP ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES IN THE SAME LOCATIONS. THERE IS NO DAMAGE ON THE INNER SURFACE. THE MARKS ARE LOCATED UPWARD OF THE DOOR GLASS REAR EDGE AND AROUND THE EDGE OF THE SOFT TOP STITCH. EACH MARK IS CAUSED FROM CONTACT WITH THE CONVERTIBLE TOP FRAME WHEN THE TOP IS OPENED AND CLOSED.
