SSM 496872021-03-31. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. Some 2017-2021 F-Super-Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L diesel engine may exhibit a hard start, lack of power and/or runs rough concern with an illuminated malfunction indicator light (MIL) and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0087 and/or P008A. This may be due to low fuel level or fuel gelling in cold ambient temperatures. If no root cause is determined after normal Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) pinpoint test MA, recommend that the customer use a different brand of fuel and use Motorcraft PM-23-A Diesel Fuel Anti-Gel and Performance Improver. Inform the customer that bio-diesel blended fuels have a higher occurrence of fuel gelling. Fuel gelling and or low fuel conditions causing a P0087 and/or P008A is not covered under warranty.
SSM 496862021-03-31. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. Some 2020-2021 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L engine may experience a lack of power due to snow packing of the engine air cleaner when operating in extremely snowy conditions. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P1548 may be present in the powertrain control module (PCM). A heavy snow environment pre-filter service kit (service part LC3Z-9K635-AA) is now available for use but is not a warrantable item. It is recommended that the service kit be removed at temperatures greater than 50F (10C) and reinstall in subsequent winter seasons in order to maintain optimal vehicle performance. The service kit instructions mention that air filter FA-2031 is required, however the heavy snow environment pre-filter service kit can be used with either engine air filter FA-1951, or FA-2031 once it is available.
SSM 496612021-03-31. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. Some 2020-2021 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L diesel engine or a 7.3L gas engine and dual alternators may require disabling or enabling the use of the second alternator. The FDRS scan tool now has an application available to allow for disabling or enabling the use of the second alternator. Start a vehicle session in FDRS using the vehicles VIN and go to the toolbox tab. The PCM will have an application called Generator Configuration. Download and run this application to enable or disable the second alternator. Next perform a Battery Monitor System (BMS) Reset. Download and run this reset and clear any DTCs.
SSM 495582021-03-03. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN. Some 2021 F-Super Duty vehicles, with 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or less may exhibit harsh or delayed engagement/shift concerns with or without transmission diagnostic trouble codes(DTC) in the powertrain control module (PCM) or the transmission control module (TCM). Most concerns at low mileage may be addressed with the accelerated main control break-in routine. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 307-01 Diagnosis and Testing, DTC Chart and/or Diagnosis By Symptom to identify the clutch(s) to be cycled. This routine cycles the shift solenoids and clutch control valves to remove contamination that may be sticking the valves and must be performed along with an adaptive learning drive cycle before attempting internal service. For claiming, use causal part 7A100 and applicable labor operations in Section 7 of the Service Labor Time Standards Manual.
SSM 496282021-03-03. Service bulletin. STEERING. Some 2017-2021 F-Super Duty vehicles may intermittently exhibit excessive steering oscillation. A new instructional video has been published in the Workshop Manual (WSM) to provide specific measurement instructions on the appropriate tools and methods to determine which steering linkage joints are exceeding lash specifications and which are operating as designed. The left side tie rod end and sector shaft arm drag link joints should not be replaced without obtaining the proper lash measurements. Refer to WSM, Section 211-03 Steering Linkage > Diagnosis and Testing > Symptom Chart.
SSM 494952021-02-04. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT. Some 2005-2021 F-Super Duty 4x4 vehicles operated in extreme dust, mud or tar sand conditions may exhibit accelerated 4x4 vacuum hub seal and or wheel bearing wear as a result of harsh operating conditions. A knuckle seal shield kit is now available for customer purchase. The kit is designed for severe duty and is non warrantable. The knuckle seal shield kit GC3Z-54024A38-A includes an installation instruction sheet
SSM 494852021-02-04. Service bulletin. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE. Some 2021 E-Series/F-Super Duty/F-650/F-750 vehicles equipped with a 6.2L or 7.3L gasoline engine may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0457 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). This may be due to a loose fuel filler cap. The fuel filler cap design changed for 2021 to require one full turn to properly tighten. Advise the customer of the design change. For further diagnostics, refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual, pinpoint test HX.
SSM 494832021-02-04. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN. Some 2017-2021 F-Super Duty and 2016-2021 F650-750 with 6.7L diesel engines, 2015-2019 Transit with 3.2L diesel engines and 2018-2021 F-150 with 3.0L diesel engines may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P206C in the powertrain control module (PCM). Review of repair data supports that P206C is often the result of incorrect diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) concentration. Per Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Pinpoint Test (PPT) RJ, a DEF concentration reading below 28% will set P206C and cause vehicle derate. If low concentration is suspected, drain fluid and replace with known good DEF before replacing any parts. Low concentration of DEF is not a warrantable condition.
SSM 494462021-02-04. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN. Some 2021 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.2L or 7.3L engine, F-150 vehicles equipped with a 3.3L or 5.0L engine, and Explorer/Police Interceptor Utility vehicles equipped with a 3.3L engine may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0106 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) while in transport mode, especially in higher altitudes. To correct the condition, clear the DTCs and deactivate transport mode. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 419-10 > General Procedures. Before starting the engine in the procedure, cycle the ignition to OFF, cycle the ignition to ON, wait ten seconds, cycle the ignition to OFF, wait ten seconds, then start the engine. If the condition remains, refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Manual for diagnostics.
SSM 494392021-02-04. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN; EQUIPMENT; EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY. Some 2020-2021 F-Super Duty vehicles with 6.7L and 10R140 powertrain may exhibit an illuminated powertrain malfunction indicator (wrench) lamp with only DTC P07F6 stored in the transmission control module (TCM). The vehicle may also exhibit harsh engagements, poor shift quality and/or loss of 9th gear as a result of the DTC being set. If no additional DTCs or symptoms are present, clear keep alive memory and transmission adaptive tables with the appropriate Ford diagnostic scan tool, and perform an adaptive learning drive cycle. Transmission replacement is not necessary. Inform customers that a further improved calibration will be available in early March 2021. Let the customer know they can continue to drive the vehicle after performing this SSM, and schedule a service appointment for early March 2021. Monitor OASIS for updates.
SSM 493932021-01-05. Service bulletin. ENGINE; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; POWER TRAIN. Some 2021 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.2L or 7.3L engine and Explorer/Police Interceptor Utility vehicles equipped with a 3.3L engine may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0106 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) while in transport mode, especially when operated in higher altitudes.
SSM 494162021-01-04. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING; POWER TRAIN. Some 2020-2021 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.2L or 7.3L gas engine may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0339 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) or the vehicle may exhibit a runs rough concern with no DTCs. This may be due to a concern with contamination on the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. If pinpoint test JD in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Manual leads to CKP sensor replacement, inspect the sensor for contamination and document the results in the warranty claim. Use causal part 6C315 and utilize labor operation 12650D57D in the Service Labor Time Standards (SLTS) Manual.
