Technician will need to bring the engine to 214 Fahrenheit or 100 Celsius. After the engine is up to temperature the oil pressure at idle should be recorded. Then run the engine at 1100 revolutions per minute for 45 seconds and record the oil pressure. Then run the engine at 3500 revolutions per minute for 45 seconds and record the oil pressure. Technician will now need to run the engine at 1400 revolutions per minute using Global Diagnostic System 2 command the oil control valve on and off 10 times on the 11th time record the reading on and off. Technician will now need to run the engine at 2500 revolutions per minute using Global Diagnostic System 2 command the oil control valve on and off 10 times on the 11th time record the reading on and off. The monitor calculates the percent of oil life remaining, based on 3 pathways. The first pathway for oil life calculation is engine revolutions. The second pathway for oil life calculation is the mileage form the last rest for all General Motors powertrains except the Volt. The third pathway for oil life calculation is the amount of time the oil is in the engine. The Volt uses a 2 year timer instead of 1 year. It also uses the engine revolution counter. It does not use the mileage pathway to count down. |

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that may have Service 4WD message in the Driver Information Center. During inspection technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code C0398 or C0326 stored in the Transfer Case Control Module. If the vehicle has Regular Production Option Code NP0 and only has diagnostic trouble code C0398 stored in the Transfer Case Control Module, then use Service Programming System to update the Transfer Case Control Module. When working with vehicles equipped NHQ and NQ6 and setting Diagnostic Trouble Code C0398 when operated in areas where the ambient temperature is below 32 Fahrenheit (0 Celsius) use Global Diagnostic System 2 to review the freeze frame failure records, record all findings and Diagnostic Trouble Codes then clear the DTCs and data. Technician will need to operate the vehicle in all ranges and ensure that no Diagnostic Trouble Codes reset. If the vehicle had a Diagnostic Trouble Code C0398 in the Transfer Case Control Module stored with any other Diagnostic Trouble Code such as C0392, C0396, C0306 or other codes related to rotational position sensor or actuator position sensor it is likely that is causing a C0398 to set and replacement of the actuator will likely not repair the vehicle. If no Diagnostic Trouble Codes reset and C0398 was set without other rotational position sensor, or actuator position sensor Diagnostic Trouble Codes then replace the actuator motor with part number 23355888. If the cam sprocket locator pin has sheared, replace the engine assembly. If the valve train is rotating during inspection, disconnect the Camshaft Position sensor and check if the engine will start. If the engine starts front cover will need to be removed to inspect for a sheared cam sprocket locator pin. If the cam sprocket locator pin has sheared, replace the engine assembly. If the engine does not start with the Camshaft Position sensor disconnected the follow published ?Engine Cranks But Does Not Run? diagnosis in Service Information. Also perform an Engine Compression Test and Cylinder Leakage Test in Service Information documents all results.
