Service bulletins for the 2009 BMW X5

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

269 on file from NHTSA, as of 2026-10-19.

1802122018-12-03. Service bulletin. ENGINE. "?Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign 11E-A03: Check and/or Replace Emissions Monitoring Components. 1. The Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) catalyst has been improved to increase emissions stability over the service life of the vehicle. 2. The SCR mixer has also been improved to optimize the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) mixture when introduced into the exhaust system. 3. Under certain driving conditions, the High-Pressure (HP) EGR valve may become restricted with excessive soot. This restriction impedes the emissions performance of the HP EGR valve. This situation may lead to the Service Engine Soon lamp illuminating. An optimized EGR valve has been developed to limit this soot buildup. Note: These improved parts may have already been replaced during a previous service visit. It will be necessary to inspect these components first before replacement. 4. Reprogramming of the DDE to optimize these improved emissions monitoring components. AFFECTED VEHICLES This Emissions Recall Campaign involves X5d and 335d models that were produced from January 2008 to September 2009. In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Emissions Recall Campaign completed or is affected by this Emissions Recall Campaign, first check if the ""Emissions Recall Campaign Completed"" label SD 92-435 is attached to the right (passenger) rear side of the hood in the engine compartment, close to the windshield. If the label is found, the campaign has already been performed. If the ""Emissions Recall Campaign Completed"" label is not present, it will be necessary to utilize the ""Service Menu"" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action. If the label is found, the campaign has already been performed. If the ""Emissions Recall Campaign Completed"" label is not present, it will be necessary to utilize the ""Service Menu"" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or

An occasional ticking or rattling noise from the camshaft hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) may occur during cold engine starts, due to frequent short-distance driving, or the noise may occur for an extended period of time even though the engine is at operating temperature. Improved parts were phased into production beginning on 10/1/2008 and fully implemented on November 31st 2008.
1217122018-12-03. Service bulletin. ENGINE; POWER TRAIN. A customer may complain of a delay in engine response after decelerating at low road speeds and then reaccelerating. This can occur when the transmission remains in a high gear due to a delay in the transmission downshifting. This situation can be more noticeable while driving on roads with slight turns or with an increasing gradient. Unfavorable EGS and DME software

B1101132018-11-26. Service bulletin. ENGINE. N63 AND N63T ENGINE: ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION, ENGINE OIL TOP-UPS AND REFILL CAPACITY. Customers with one of the vehicles above may complain that the engine's oil consumption is "too high," resulting in engine oil top-ups and workshop visits to address the issue before the vehicle displays an engine oil service as being "due." When the vehicle's engine oil drops to the minimum level, a message will display in the vehicle advising the driver to "add 1 quart of engine oil." After topping up and continued operation, the "add engine oil" message may display again before an engine oil service is required and performed. CAUSE Engines that are fitted with a turbocharger, as part of their normal operation, will consume engine oil at a higher rate than a naturally aspirated engine (non-turbocharged engine). In this case, a "turbocharged" engine could require topping up of the engine oil more frequently.

1111122018-11-26. Service bulletin. ENGINE. ?SI B11 11 12 January 2013 EngineTechnical Service This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B11 11 12 dated November 2012. PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS. BMW centers must ensure recalls are completed after having been notified by BMW of North America, LLC (BMWNA) that a safety-related defect or noncompliance exists in any motor vehicle or item of replacement equipment in the center's possession at the time of notification. In BMW NA's case, this notification would typically be made by the issuance of a recall notification in the form of a Service Information bulletin (SIB) or transmission of a Dealer Communication System (DCS) recall message. Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if a recall campaign is announced by BMW NA, centers must ensure that all recalls on new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are completed BEFORE delivery to the consumer. This means that centers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers with an open recall. The Safety Act also prohibits centers from selling or leasing the motor vehicle or item of replacement equipment, unless and until the open recall has been completed BEFORE delivery. This also pertains to vehicles in the Certified Pre-Owned program, and to items of replacement equipment. Finally, BMW centers should not sell or use parts that have been recalled by BMW NA. Please follow the specific instructions provided by BMW NA on the return or disposition of the parts. designates changes to this revision SUBJECT Recall Campaign 12V-550:: Replace Hex Bolt with Internal Thread for Deflection Pulley. 0104142018-11-13. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. External Engine Oil Leaks and Repairs. During the vehicle's operational life, normal engine oil seepage or sweating, in addition to accumulated road dust, dirt and grime in the engine compartment can cause the appearance of a more severe oil leak. This is further exaggerated by residual oil that remains on the engine assembly after maintenance services are performed, e.g., oil filter changes, "engine oil top-offs," etc. If this visual appearance of accumulated oil on the engine assembly as an "active leak" is misinterpreted, unnecessary gasket repairs/replacements will result. Specifically, our analysis of the claim-related data for vehicles equipped with the engines noted in this bulletin is showing an above-average number of engine gasket repair/replacement claim submissions. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide your workshop with information and a procedure that will help in identifying engine oils leaks that do and do not require a repair.
