Service bulletins for the 2018 BMW M5

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

208 on file from NHTSA, as of 2026-10-19.

B0117242025-10-09. Warranty extension. ENGINE. The Fuel Injector Condition-Specific Repair Coverage Program applies to qualifying repairs for the required replacement of one or more the fuel injectors which were determined to have failed due to a buildup of external corrosion in the engine’s center fuel injector bore area that resulted after this location was periodically contaminated by engine coolant residue over time. This special program’s coverage is 15 years / 150,000 miles as determined from the vehicle's original in-service / first delivery date.

BMW offers a new special ISTA Installation made available for Roadside Assistance / Mobile Service technicians. The new ISTA Version is also able to be used in case of a Remote Software Upgrade (RSU) programming failure to get the customer car reprogrammed on site. In case of a Remote Software Upgrade failure, the engine start is prevented for safety reasons until the vehicle is programmed correctly. Most of the errors occur when only one control unit fails to program correctly.
SIB6402222022-07-05. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. Mist formation on the windshield inside surface may occur at departure or after MSA (automaticstart/stop). Acoustic abnormality in the area of the recirculated air flap (recirculation flap closing and opening severaltimes). The above may occur individually or in combination.
B1701212022-06-21. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING; FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE. The quick disconnect coupling on the cylinder head coolant vent line could break at the cylinder head. This would lead to loss of coolant from the engine.

B1106212021-11-08. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. When performing an engine oil service on vehicles equipped with a S63M engine the ETK states to use "Setoil filter element" P/N 11 42 5 A33 C43. P/N 11 42 5 A33 C43 is a new part number that was recently created without current parts availability. Until further notice ONLY use "Set oil filter element" P/N 11 42 7 848 321.
SIB 62 03 212021-10-25. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. When the vehicle is operated in Sport Mode, the engine speed is no longer displayed in the BMW Head-Up Display (HUD).
B6104212021-08-09. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; EQUIPMENT; ENGINE. The customer may complain of a check control message stating "Safe share detected" (CCM-ID 953). Check control message can be verified by checking key reader information or performing the Check control message history service function.
B5102212021-03-15. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. AIR DUCT COVER LOOSE OR MISSING: Prolonged high-speed driving can cause movements of the fender, causing the air duct to become loose.
B6624192021-02-01. Service bulletin. ENGINE; EQUIPMENT; EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. REMOTE CONTROL IS NOT DETECTED: Vehicle cannot be opened or closed using comfort access, engine start is not possible, and the vehicle may not start when placing the key against the steering column.
B1604202021-02-01. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING; EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY; EQUIPMENT. ?TANK VENTILATION DIAGNOSIS: There is software error in the diagnosis of the fuel tank ventilation valve. This error may result in the Service Engine Soon (MIL) light not being activated if a fault is found in the tank vent system after a second fault detection. This error will also disable diagnosis of the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor (if a fault is detected in the tank vent system).
B6105202020-04-20. Service bulletin. ENGINE. CCM DISPLAYED "INCREASED BATTERY DRAIN" CAUSED BY CONTROLLER: This Service Information Bulletin (Revision 1) replaces SI B61 05 20 dated February 2020. Electrostatic discharge at standstill / start engine. Energy management" The results of the Energy Diagnosis test plan identifies the Controller as the root cause of the CCM. The Controller delays the vehicle going to sleep by up to 6 minutes. In some cases this will cause the CCM 415 to be displayed when starting the vehicle. Replacing the Controller in this case will not correct this situation.
B1204192020-02-18. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. DME FAULT MEMORY ENTRY FOR THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR: This Service Information Bulletin (Revision 1) replaces SI B12 04 19 dated February 2019. Technicians may notice this fault logged during a diagnostic session: Fault code: Control module: Fault Text: 160021 DME Crankshaft sensor: general loss of synchronism Environmental conditions are vehicle speed 0 (stationary) and engine speed less than 1500 rpm. There is no customer-facing symptom nor related check control message displayed. Phantom/pseudo fault due to unsuitable DME software. Background: After parking the vehicle and turning off the engine both DME control units go into sleep mode at different times. The DME of cylinder bank 2 ("secondary") goes into sleep mode first The DME of cylinder bank 1 ("primary") is still awake and can experience a reduction in signal voltage for the crankshaft sensor signal This signal change can mistakenly be evaluated as a skipped crankshaft sensor cog by the DME. If the engine is started while the primary DME is still awake this causes a brief loss of synchronization with the secondary DME. Fault 160021 is logged after three (3) consecutive engine starts with this momentary loss of synchronization. Note: Starting the engine after the primary DME has also gone into sleep mode will avoid the loss of synchronization.
B1202202020-02-18. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE MIL IS ILLUMINATED WITH OXYGEN SENSOR FAULTS STORED: One of the following faults may be stored in the digital motor electronics (DME) either as part of diagnosing a different issue; and/or an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). Fault code Control module Fault code text 13900 DME Oxygen sensor after catalytic converter from rich to lean: Delayed response Or: 12B011 DME Oxygen sensor 2 after of catalytic converter from rich to lean: Delayed response This situation is not associated with any drivability complaints. An unfavorable DME diagnostic calibration may cause a fault code to be erroneously stored. These faults will cause the MIL to illuminate.
B1305192019-08-19. Service bulletin. ENGINE; EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY; EQUIPMENT. DELIVERY STOP: CAMSHAFT SENSORS. On affected vehicles the camshaft sensors will be inspected and if necessary replaced.
