What is wrong

Issue:

On certain trucks equipped with a 3.5 L Ecoboost engine, brake fluid could leak from the brake master cylinder into the brake booster. This can cause reduced front brake performance, and the driver may experience increased brake pedal travel and increased pedal effort. Full braking function remains in the rear wheel circuit.

Note: Depending on the amount of brake fluid loss, the driver may hear a warning chime and see a red brake warning indicator in the instrument cluster. This is an expansion of Ford recall 20S31 (Transport Canada Recall No. 2020-252).

Safety Risk:

Reduced front brake performance can cause extended stopping distances and increase the risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions:

Ford will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a dealer to replace the brake master cylinder. The dealer will also replace the brake booster if the brake master cylinder is leaking.

SSM 519622023-11-03. Service bulletin. Some 2016-2018 F-150 and 2016-2017 Expedition/Navigator vehicles may require pressure bleeding of the brake system. The brake system pressure bleeding procedure in the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 206-00, has been updated to add a warning to not apply the brake pedal or master cylinder damage may occur.
SSM 512612023-01-06. Service bulletin. Some Ford and Lincoln vehicles may exhibit noise when the brakes are applied. When diagnosing and repairing brake noise conditions, use the Workshop Manual (WSM) and the appropriate pinpoint test in section 206-00. The brake rotors should only be machined if directed by the WSM because one or more of the following conditions are present on the braking surface: scoring, excessive corrosion/rust or pitting, bluing/discoloration and/or heat spots. For additional information, refer to WSM section 206-00.
SSM 511202022-10-11. Service bulletin. Some Ford and Lincoln vehicles may exhibit noise when the brakes are applied. SSM 500642021-09-04. Service bulletin. Some 2013-2021 Ford and Lincoln vehicles may exhibit noise when the brakes are applied.
TSB-20-20282020-03-03. Service bulletin. Some 2013-2018 F-150/Expedition/Navigator vehicles equipped with 4-wheel drive (4WD) may exhibit an intermittent grinding noise while driving in 2-wheel drive (2WD) mode most commonly on acceleration. This may be due to a loss of vacuum to the integrated wheel end (IWE) actuators and/or wear of the IWE components. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to reprogram the transfer case control module (TCCM) and replace any worn vacuum and/or IWE components.
SSM 477012019-03-04. Service bulletin. Some 2016-2019 F-150 vehicles may exhibit DTC C0051 in the ABS module. This DTC compares steering angle between the power steering control module (PSCM) and ABS and may set due to towing, driving in heavy winds, loose suspension or steering gear components, alignment, or harness or connector concerns with the ABS or PSCM circuits. The ABS pinpoint tests AE, LA, or LB may direct a replacement of the PSCM after disconnecting/reconnecting PSCM connectors. Do not replace the PSCM using ABS Pinpoint tests AE, LA, LB. Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM) Section, 211-02 to locate the correct PSCM pinpoint tests for the PSCM DTCs that are retrieved during the PSCM self-test. The ABS pinpoint tests are in the process of being updated.
SSM 474862018-09-24. Service bulletin. Some 2017-2019 F-Super Duty vehicles may exhibit concerns related to brake drag. Utilize Workshop Manual (WSM) diagnostics in section 206-00 to verify the correct installation of the stoplamp switch. Improper adjustment of the stoplamp switch can cause the brake pedal assembly to lightly apply the brakes resulting in dragging condition.
SSM 461322017-02-10. Service bulletin. SOME 2008-2017 FORD/MERCURY/LINCOLN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH SYNC MAY GENERATE A VHR THAT IDENTIFIES A CONCERN WITH THE BRAKES AND SUSPENSION CATEGORY INDICATING SERVICE IS REQUIRED DUE TO A BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LAMP BEING ILLUMINATED. IF THE PARK BRAKE WAS APPLIED WHEN THE VHR WAS GATHERING DATA FROM THE MAJOR VEHICLE SYSTEMS, THE BRAKES AND SUSPENSION MESSAGE WILL BE REPORTED AS THE VHR LOOKS FOR ANY WARNING LAMPS ILLUMINATED IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. RERUN THE VHR WITH THE ENGINE ON AND VEHICLE IN PARK, AND ENSURE THE PARK BRAKE IS DISENGAGED. IF THE SYNC VHR IS STILL REPORTING A CONCERN TO THE CUSTOMERS SYNC OWNERS ACCOUNT, REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION FOR DIAGNOSIS BY DTC OR SYMPTOM. STARTING IN 2015 NOT ALL SYNC EQUIPPED VEHICLES SUPPORT VHR, REFER TO THE OWNERS MANUAL FOR VHR OPERATION.
SSM 461392017-02-08. Service bulletin. SOME 2015-2016 F-150 VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE INTERMITTENT LOSS OF THROTTLE PEDAL RESPONSE, ILLUMINATED WRENCH, HILL DESCENT, AIRBAG, ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM(ABS) AND/OR ADVANCED TRAC WARNING INDICATORS AND/OR P2122, P2123, P2124, P2125, P2127, P2128 AND/OR P2138 DTCS. THIS MAY BE CAUSED BY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION (APP) SENSOR 14A005 HARNESS BEING IMPROPERLY ROUTED BEHIND THE BRAKE BOOSTER TO BRAKE PEDAL BRACKET. IF THE HARNESS IS IMPROPERLY ROUTED, LOOSEN THE BRACKET TO FREE THE HARNESS. INSPECT AND REPAIR DAMAGED CIRCUITS BEFORE PROPERLY ROUTING THE HARNESS. IF THE HARNESS IS PROPERLY ROUTED, PROCEED WITH NORMAL DIAGNOSTICS IN THE WORKSHOP MANUAL (WSM).
