Volvo Car USA LLC and Volvo Car Canada LTD (Volvo) on behalf of Volvo Car Corporation, has decided to launch Service Campaign S29846 on certain model year 2016 XC90 vehicles. Volvo has identified that engine coolant may leak due to an insufficient quick connector in the coolant expansion tank bleeder hose. Should this condition occur, a message in the Driver Information Module (DIM) will appear informing the driver about low coolant level and in a worse case situation high engine temperature.

Volvo Car USA LLC and Volvo Car Canada LTD (Volvo) on behalf of Volvo Car Group has decided to launch Recall R29936 on model year 2016 XC90 vehicles. Volvo has identified that the coolant bleeder hose (engine side) may degrade over time and crack due to heat and humidity load. This condition can create a coolant leak, and also pose a risk of coolant leaking on the catalytic converter. If the coolant leak goes unnoticed, coolant may accumulate in the catalytic converter heatshield insulation and, in a worst case scenario, over time this might result in a fire in the engine compartment area when the vehicle is stationary.

Make sure that the sound is coming from the engine pad, NOT from the drive shaft. Remove the left engine pad and split by removing the small screw. Lubricate with graphite grease (PN 1161851) on points as in attachment. Torque for small screw is 8 nm.

Volvo has identified that the Engine Control Module (ECM) may not correctly monitor the coolant thermostat (between 20 to 60 degrees Celsius). This condition can result in increased vehicle emissions and non-compliance with On Board Diagnostics (OBD) II requirements. The corrective action is a Total Upgrade.

The sound may come from the balance shaft which is fitted in the oil sump area where the noise is most concentrated. A new design of the balance shaft is planned to be introduced 2018-Q2. Replace the balance shaft according the instructions in VIDA. Note: It's extremely important to adjust the new balance shaft with the correct tools according the instructions otherwise the sound may occur again in a short mileage.
