Service bulletins for the 2021 Ford Expedition

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

SSM 543922025-12-01. Service bulletin. ENGINE; POWER TRAIN. Some 2021-2025 F-150/Expedition/Navigator vehicles equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine may exhibit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0299 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) and may also exhibit a rattle noise from the turbocharger. This may be due to the wastegate actuator rod being disconnected. Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-04 Fuel Charging and Controls > Turbocharger has been added to address this condition to allow servicing of the turbocharger actuator rod. In addition, the wastegate actuator rod and associated retention springs and clips have been released as lower level components to complete the repair without replacing the entire turbocharger actuator assembly.

SSM 523352024-03-20. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. For 2015-2024 Ford and Lincoln vehicles equipped with turbocharged engines and customer concern of an engine oil leak, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00 for oil leak inspection and testing methods. Ford has evaluated turbochargers replaced for oil leak symptoms and although oil may collect on the external surface of a turbocharger, it is extremely rare for a turbocharger assembly to be the root cause of the oil leak. Careful inspection of the turbocharger oil feed and drain tubes should be performed along with the recommended WSM procedures as needed. Warranty claims for turbocharger replacement going forward will be assessed.
SSM 515822023-05-04. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. Some 2020-2021 Expedition vehicles may exhibit an intermittent no auto restart during auto-start-stop operation with a Shift To Park Restart Engine message displayed in the message center. Follow normal Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-14 diagnostics if this concern occurs. If diagnostics are inconclusive inform the customer that Ford is currently investigating this concern and that they can continue to drive the vehicle with the auto stop/start system turned off. Monitor OASIS for further updates.
SSM 508352022-06-17. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. Some 2021-2022 F-150 vehicles built on or before 08-Mar-2022 and some 2021-2022 Expedition/Navigator vehicles built on or before 14-Mar-2022 equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine may experience a coolant leak at the thermostat housing. This may be due to an incomplete weld on the thermostat housing which can leak during normal vehicle operation. To correct the condition, replace the thermostat housing using service part number ML3Z-8A586-C. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-03. For claiming, use causal part 8A586 and applicable labor operations in Section 08 of the Service Labor Time Standards (SLTS) Manual.

Some 2015-2021 Ford and Lincoln vehicles may exhibit an illuminated MIL with diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) P0011, P0012, P0014, P0015, P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019, P0021, P0022, P0024 and/or P0025. This may be due to small debris causing the VCT solenoid to stick. Before attempting any component diagnosis or replacement of the VCT solenoid, refer to Powertrain Control and Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) pinpoint test HK11 to cycle the affected VCT solenoid 10 times to attempt to clear the debris. For claiming, use causal part 6M280 and applicable labor operations in Section 10 of the Service Labor Time Standards (SLTS) Manual.
