Service bulletins for the 2014 Chevrolet Volt
A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

| PIT4943D | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE; FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0442. Technician will need to review Techlink article from May 2013 titled "Using the Evaporative Emissions System Tester" Technician will need to follow these steps to help diagnose the issue. First after the P0442 has been verified do not disturb any of the fuel system components. The technician now can use the scan tool to close the Evaporative Emissions System. If possible change the tank pressure sensor units from inch_H2O to milimeter_Hg for better resolution. Now the vehicle can be stared to monitor the tank pressure sensor output value for approximately two minutes. If the tank pressure sensor value does change, pressurize the fuel tank side of the purge solenoid with the GE 41413-A / J 41413-A and the necessary adaptors. Now add smoke and allow pressure to stabilize for 2 minutes. If smoke is allowed to pass through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid. If the tank pressure sensor value does not change, then install CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid. With the Evaporative Emissions System closed, pressurize the system through the CH-48096 adaptor and allow the system to completely stabilize, by observing the Press / Vac Gauge for a minimum of 5 minutes. Now add smoke to the system with GE 41413-A / J 41413-A after system stabilization. Now inspect the purge solenoid, engine side, fuel cap, canister vent solenoid filter and any line quick connects. When the leak is unable to be located, test under a vacuum condition. his type of leak may be detected by using the scan tool Purge/Seal function to create a vacuum in the Evaporative Emissions System and then observe the FTP sensor parameter for vacuum decay. |
| PIP5334 | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. ENGINE; EQUIPMENT. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Codes a P0AB9 and P0AC4. Technician should not clear any Diagnostic Trouble Codes and ensure Global Diagnostic System 2 is up to date. Technician will need to use Global Diagnostic System 2 and check all modules for Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Now use Global Diagnostic System 2 to create freeze frame data from Hybrid Powertrain Control Module and the Engine Control Module and save a report. Technician will need to verify that the vehicle had not been run very low or out of fuel. Also verify the customer did not press the Power Button causing the vehicle to turn off while driving. Verify that the Internal Combustion Engine runs properly and no other engine related or communication related Diagnostic Trouble Codes are present. Technician should inquire if the remote star was used on the last two drive cycles before the Diagnostic Trouble Code set. Technician should update the Engine Control Module if so. Technician should inspect the ground locations G106 (engine block) and G113 (drive unit case) have been cleaned and are secure making sure the ground eyelets do not spin. Technician should also check for past service history for prior mechanical engine or wiring harness repairs. Inspect the cam timing connector and repair any damage. |

Technician will need to inspect the Hybrid/EV Battery Pack drain plug, located on the battery tray, regardless of fluid level at the Hybrid/EV Battery Pack coolant reservoir. If any moisture is found during the drain plug inspection, contact the General Motors Technical Assistance Center for further assistance. If the coolant level in cooling system is at the proper level and there is no moisture in the battery during the drain plug inspection, and the coolant freeze protection is between -10 and -40 degrees Fahrenheit, then update the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module2 and Battery Energy Control Module with the latest Calibrations in TIS-2-Web. Technician will need to gather all measurements recorded while evaluating Diagnostic Trouble Code P0AA6 and contact the GM Technical Assistance Center for further assistance. |
| PIP5282 | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. This Preliminary Information communication advises the technician about the calculation and operation of the engine oil life monitor. The monitor calculates the percent of oil life remaining, based on 3 pathways. The first pathway for oil life calculation is engine revolutions. The second pathway for oil life calculation is the mileage form the last rest for all General Motors powertrains except the Volt. The third pathway for oil life calculation is the amount of time the oil is in the engine. The Volt uses a 2 year timer instead of 1 year. It also uses the engine revolution counter. It does not use the mileage pathway to count down. |
| PIP4870C | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that may have a engine noise is sometimes louder than expected. Also will explain the known normal and abnormal reasons why the engine may be louder. When the vehicle speed is between 25-50 miles per hour the road noise does not mask the engine noise this is considered normal. When the vehicle is first started for the day the system will perform a catalyst preconditioning for about a minute. At this time the engine will seem louder than normal, this is normal. At times the engine often runs at wide open throttle, but at a reduced speed. This sound is uncharacteristic of a four-cylinder engine in a traditional sedan, but is a characteristic of an extended range electric vehicle such as the Chevrolet Volt. Technician will be able to inspect for abnormal induction ground-out conditions. These locations should be checked lower rubber isolator on air box not installed correctly or missing, upper induction resonator cover not installed properly, refrigerant line not bolted to engine support bracket, and throttle body contacting coolant pipes behind it. Abnormal exhaust ground-out conditions should also be inspected. These locations are at the exhaust clamp rearward of the second catalytic converter is contacting the battery heat shield, exhaust resonator underbody is contacting the heat shield. Repair any abnormal issue found. |
| PIP4859D | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING.
