To determine if the concern is the result of a frozen positive crankcase ventilation system on inline 4 and 5 engines disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation vacuum pipe that is attached to the rear of cam cover and inspect the inside of it for ice, moisture, and/or sludge. Also inspect the engine oil dipstick and engine oil fill cap for moisture, sludge, and/or ice. To determine if the concern is the result of a frozen positive crankcase ventilation system on inline 6 carefully disconnect the top or the bottom of the rubber positive crankcase ventilation vacuum hose that is between the #3 and #4 intake runners and inspect for ice. Also inspect the engine oil dipstick and engine oil fill cap for moisture, sludge, and/or ice. If the positive crankcase ventilation is not determined to be frozen follow Service Information diagnosis and any other bulletins or Preliminary Information that apply to the vehicle you are working on. If there is moisture, ice, and/or sludge in/on the oil fill cap, oil dipstick, and/or positive crankcase ventilation vacuum tube, this is most likely the result of a frozen positive crankcase ventilation system and the suggestions in the Preliminary Information should be followed.
