Service bulletins for the 2017 BMW i8

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

153 on file from NHTSA, as of 2026-10-19.

B3405172020-08-31. Service bulletin. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC; WHEELS. TICKING NOISE WHILE CORNERING WITHOUT THE BRAKES APPLIED: Ticking noise coming from front wheel while cornering without brakes applied, noticeable at low speeds. The vehicle must be moving.
B5130162020-04-20. Service bulletin. AIR BAGS; PARKING BRAKE. TAILGATE UNINTENTIONALLY OPENS: This Service Information Bulletin (Revision 4) replaces SI B51 30 16 dated March 2018. Trunk/tailgate may open when vehicle is locked Trunk/tailgate may open while the vehicle is in motion usually after stopping such as a traffic light etc. Vehicle key trunk/tailgate button may be accidentally pressed thus opening the tailgate.
B3405172020-04-20. Service bulletin. BACK OVER PREVENTION; SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC; WHEELS; POWER TRAIN. TICKING NOISE WHILE CORNERING WITHOUT THE BRAKES APPLIED: This Service Information Bulletin (Revision 3) replaces SI B34 05 17 dated September 2017. Ticking noise coming from front wheel while cornering without brakes applied noticeable at low speeds. The vehicle must be moving. See attached video V34 01 20 Note: For a similar noise heard when parking with the brakes applied refer to SIB 31 01 12. Microscopic movement of the contact interface between the inner brake disc and the wheel bearing flange on vehicles equipped with lightweight brake discs.
B3403162018-12-10. Service bulletin. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:WHEEL SPEED SENSOR/TONE RING. Erroneous Wheel Speed Sensors Plausibility Faults - Diagnosis. INFORMATION These faults do NOT indicate brake system malfunction, or cause Check Control message display. Do not replace any parts! Perform a 12V battery reset and clear the fault memory. In case one of the plausibility faults returns after a short test drive, diagnose it using the corresponding ISTA test plan for the wheel speed sensor faults.
B3403152018-12-10. Service bulletin. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DISC:PADS; SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:DISC:PADS; SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC. SUBJECT Uneven Brake Pad Wear with Regenerative Braking. Under certain vehicle operating conditions, the brake calipers' outer pads (without wear sensor) will wear faster than the inner pads (with wear sensor). This is a normal brake pad wear characteristic that is inherent to the design of this vehicle. CAUSE Certain driving styles can result with a more frequent fluctuation between the use of the vehicle's service brake and its regenerative braking feature, this type of braking characteristic increases the use and consequently the wear of the outer brake pads.
B3406162018-11-05. Service bulletin. SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:ANTILOCK:WHEEL SPEED SENSOR; SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:WHEEL SPEED SENSOR/TONE RING. "DSC ""WHEEL SPEED SENSOR"" FAULT CODES AND MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP- DIAGNOSTIC. 1. DSC's fault codes stored from two different wheel speed sensors (both front or both rear): 4809B0 - wheel speed sensor - front left - drive off recognition faulty and 4809CD - wheel speed sensor - front right - drive off recognition faultyor 4809B9 - wheel speed sensor - rear left - drive off recognition faulty and 480686 - wheel speed sensor - rear right - drive off recognition faulty. 2. Next ignition ON (after above codes stored). a) DME fault can occur:1F054D - drive, safety function: Drive power output reduced, DSC signals implausible and b) Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may light up. Faulty drive off recognition due to: a towing operation with a raised axle operation of the vehicle on the vehicle hoist operation of the vehicle on the roller test stand DSC diagnosis recognizes implausible wheel speeds, so no control is possible. DME fault is entered on safety grounds since the DSC fault still exists after a terminal change and may only be removed while driving."
B6621162018-11-05. Service bulletin. ENGINE; LANE DEPARTURE: SENSING SYSTEM: OTHER; SERVICE BRAKES. KAFAS CAMERA-BASED ASSISTANCE SYSTEM LIMITS. INFORMATION The situations described above may all be caused by known limitations of the system such as: Dirty windshield Incomplete calibration process Unsuccessful calibration Restricted visibility- weather conditions or parked vehicles Missing lamps on target vehicle Non-standard vehicle exterior surfaces Insufficient ambient lighting Abrupt motion of target vehicle.

The summaries are NHTSA's. Each bulletin's page links NHTSA's copy of the manufacturer's document.
