Service bulletins for the 2014 BMW i3

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

313 on file from NHTSA, as of 2026-10-19.

B6135142018-11-05. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. "Displayed Range Is Lower After Programming. After the vehicle is programmed with ISTA/P 3.53.3 (i-level I001-14-07-503), the displayed vehicle range in the instrument cluster is lower than prior to the software update. The actual range that the vehicle is capable of achieving on a full charge has not changed. The difference between the displayed range and actual range is always conservative, yet this difference varies based on driving profile. When driving primarily at highway speeds, the difference between displayed and actual range is within a few percent of each other. When driving primarily with a low speed/city profile, the gap may widen to as much as 20% or more. Software improvements have been made to the range algorithm to improve its accuracy in all driving scenarios. These updates are available with ISTA/P 3.55.0 (I-level I001-15-03-501). In addition, the following enhancements are integrated into this new I-level: ? The state of charge (SOC) percentage is visible in the upper left corner of the Kombi. It has been added to the board computer display in order for the customer to better manage the vehicle range. ? On vehicles from 3/2015 production, hospitality charging (charger sharing) has been added. This feature will automatically unlock the charge port when the vehicle is fully charged and still plugged in. This feature is not backwards-compatible to vehicles produced prior to 3/2015. ? REx only - if the SOC reaches 2.0% with the REx running, the message ""Low Battery. Power Reduction Possible."" will appear in the Kombi. In addition to the range display, the customer may notice that the vehicle's range has decreased as outside temperatures have gotten colder. This is most noticeable in extreme cold climates, and when preconditioning is not used. This situation does not indicate a problem and is independent of the range display algorithm. CAUSE The algorithm that determines the displayed range, was changed with the 14-07-503 software level. The r
B6108152018-11-05. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. "High-Voltage Charging Cable Lock Malfunction. One of the following situations can occur: ? The vehicle cannot be charged via the high-voltage charging procedure. The indicator light on the charging socket lights up white and does not change colors. ? The high-voltage charging cable cannot be unlocked and disconnected. One of the following faults codes is also stored in the Charging Interface Module (LIM): 805532 ""High-voltage charging socket: Lock on the charging plug, status implausible"" 805503 ""High-voltage charging socket: Charging plug lock, line disconnection"" CAUSE ? The emergency-operation tensioning strap is jammed. ? The actuator drive for the charging socket is not working."
B6107152018-11-05. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. "Charging Stops when Using ""Occasional Use"" Cable. When charging the vehicle with the Occasional Use Cable (OUC), and the charge rate set to ""Min"" in the CID, charging may switch off during the charge cycle. In rare cases, the vehicle may not start the charging cycle at all. The following fault is stored in the Electric Machine Electronics (EME): 0x222843 - charging management: Charging target not reachable (power of charger too low) Updated software is available to prevent this situation from recurring. CAUSE The EME software had a minimum charging power threshold of 600W. On the ""Min"" charge setting in the CID, the target charging current is 6 amps. Therefore, if the available voltage at the wall socket dips below 100 volts at any time, charging will be switched off."
B1220152018-11-05. Service bulletin. ENGINE; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. "Service Engine Soon (MIL): RDME FC 120006. The Service Engine Soon light (MIL) is intermittently illuminated in the instrument cluster, and fault code 120006 ""Information engine switch-off time: too long compared to cooling of engine coolant"" is stored in the RDME. CAUSE Software error, faulty component, or cooling issue"
6138142018-11-05. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; POWER TRAIN. ?SI B61 38 14 February 2015 General Electrical SystemsTechnical Service This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B61 38 14 dated January 2015. designates changes to this revision SUBJECT Drivetrain Malfunction (CCM 794) with Isolation Faults. The Drivetrain Malfunction check control message (CCM 794) is displayed, either while driving or when starting up. The following faults are stored in the vehicle: EME: 22280F and/or 222814 SME: 21F0E3 and/or 21F0E4 When the CCM is present, there are no apparent drivability concerns. After allowing the vehicle to rest and then restart, the CCM typically does not reappear. CAUSE The cause of an isolation fault is generally a resistance between HV+ or HV- and the shield/chassis ground, which is below a predetermined threshold. The following procedure addresses these faults when caused by a defect in the cable between the HV battery and the EME, as well as when excess moisture is present inside the REx eMachine. This moisture condenses and triggers the above-mentioned faults after a long REx runtime followed by rapid cooling.
6102152018-11-05. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; POWER TRAIN. "MCheck Control Message ""Battery Discharge"" Displays Intermittently. The customer states that a ""Battery Discharge"" check control message is displayed intermittently when the vehicle is started. The following fault code is also stored: DME ""213901 - Power management: Reduction or switch-off of individual electrical consumers"" DME/IBS software error."

B6527162018-11-05. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE. SOFTWARE CHANGES AFTER PROGRAMMING WITH ISTA/P V3.59.2. INFORMATION Aftersales customer service representatives need to be aware of the following changes that occur to features and functions of the i01 (i3) after reprogramming and encoding by ISTA/P 3.59.2 to integration level 16-07-503. An additional option, in the detail view of the Points of Interest (POI), to display valid charging stations for charging a BMW i vehicle. This list is automatically compiled through BMW i drivers successfully charging their vehicle. This list may now be filtered to include only the 20 charging locations with the most charging outlets in the area. Without the filter, the system will still display up to 5000 charging stations in a 300km (186 m) radius. Vehicles with 5AR Traffic Jam Assistant or 5AT Driving Assistant Plus produced before 07/2014 - Traffic Jam Assistant is now operational up to 60km/h (37 mph). Its operation was previously only available up to 40 km/h (25 mph). The range display has been optimized when the navigation system is activated. Previously, when the navigation system was activated, the range would be reduced because of a difference in the algorithms used by the navigation system and the instrument cluster for range calculation. They have been optimized and the effect on the range display has been minimized. B6523162018-11-05. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE; EQUIPMENT; EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:RADIO/TAPE DECK/CD ETC.. ?AUDIO VOLUME NOT RESTORED AFTER MSA STOP, ENTRY HEAD UNIT. Volume of audio system (when set to near maximum) is reduced when Auto Start-Stop (MSA) stop occurs and is not restored upon automatic engine restart. This is normal system behavior - serves to protect the head unit, battery drain and avoidance of incremental leaps in the loudness. The loudness is reduced to 2/3 of maximum and is not restored. Note: Air conditioning output is also reduced upon MSA stop and is not restored for similar reasons.
