Service bulletin PI1002B
A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

NHTSA's summary
Grease or sealant visible on steering gear - should not be interpreted as leak. Some customers or technicians may comment on seeing grease or sealant on certain locations of the steering gear. The illustrations below include arrows showing the areas on the steering gear that the supplier intentionally applies sealing grease. Any of these locations have the potential of showing visible grease under normal operation.

| PIP5140A | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician that steps to diagnose and repair vehicles that have a vibration in the 30-40 MPH range. Technician will need to visually inspect the propeller shaft if Pico readings indicate a propeller shaft 1 disturbance. Technician will need to inspect for obvious signs of damage to the propeller shaft, dents, scrapes, and under coating. If the propeller shaft is damaged replace the propeller shaft. If propeller shaft inspection does not indicate any concerns, then record Pico readings with the sensor placed inside the vehicle where the vibration is felt the most. Technician should rotate the propeller shaft 180 degrees at the rear flange and re-evaluate. If propeller shaft re-indexing does not correct concern, see the appropriate section of the latest version of PI1354 and if further assistance is needed see the latest version of PIP5338 prior to contacting General Motors Technical Assistance Center at the number you have been provided for further assistance. |
| PIT5501D | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on the steps to diagnosis and repair steering that feels loose or has excessive play. This concern could be caused by the Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment becoming misadjusted. Technician will need to replace the steering gear pitman arm shaft with an updated design. |
| PIT5501 | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on the steps to diagnosis and repair steering that feels loose or has excessive play. This concern could be cause by an incorrect Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment. Technician will perform a Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment procedure. Technician will remove the steering gear. The steering gear pitman shaft lash adjuster nut will need to be loosened. Turn the steering gear pitman shaft lash adjuster screw counterclockwise until fully extended. Turn the steering gear pitman shaft lash adjuster screw clockwise one full turn. Rotate the steering gear input shaft from stop to stop using a socket designed for the input shaft geometry, or crows foot with ratchet while counting the number of turns. Starting at either stop, turn the steering gear input shaft back half the total number of turns counted previously. This is the center position of the steering. Ensure the steering gear pitman shaft is centered. The flat on the steering gear input shaft should be facing upward and parallel with the steering gear side cover. Also the master spline on the steering gear pitman shaft is in line with the steering gear pitman shaft lash adjuster screw. Use a torque wrench on the steering gear input shaft to rotate the steering gear input shaft 300 degrees from each side of the center of the input shaft. The input shaft MUST rotate smoothly and must NOT stick or bind. Record the average turning torque from -300 to +300 degree sweep. The average "off center friction" torque must be 0.4 to 1.1 Nm (4 to 10 in lbs). If the torque is outside this range, replace the steering gear assembly. Tighten the steering gear pitman shaft lash adjuster nut to 75-85Nm (55-63 lb ft). Reprogram the Power Steering Control module with the latest calibrations in Tis2Web. Using the scan tool perform a Steering Angle Sensor Centering. Then use the scan tool to perform a Power Steering Pressure S |
