The nuts cannot back off because they are locking nuts.  If the clamp load on the bolts is not sufficient, the anchor plate may move when the brake is applied in either forward or reverse direction.  This movement may cause individual brake components to fail or eventually fatigue all the anchor plate mounting bolts.  If all bolts break due to fatigue, the worst-case would be complete loss of braking at a wheel end which could result in an extended stopping distance and could cause a collision, possibly resulting in property damage, personal injury or death. Les contre-écrous ne peuvent pas se desserrer, mais si la puissance de serrage des boulons est insuffisante, les plaques de fixation peuvent se déplacer quand on applique les freins, en marche avant comme en marche arrière. De tels mouvements peuvent entraîner la défaillance de composants du frein ou la fatigue éventuelle de tous les boulons de montage de la plaque de fixation. Si tous ces boulons se brisent, il se pourrait alors, dans le pire des cas, qu'il y ait perte de puissance de freinage complète à la roue affectée, ce qui pourrait faire augmenter les distances d'arrêt et causer un accident pouvant entraîner des dommages matériels, des blessures corporelles ou des pertes de vie.
