This is considered normal and NO repair should be performed. During production, differential ring and pinion gears receive a manganese phosphate coating (commonly referred to as black oxide). This coating forms a porous, oil-retentive surface that improves boundary lubrication and reduces adhesive wear during initial contact cycles. Designed as a sacrificial layer, it is gradually removed under load throughout the break-in process. As a result, after the first few hundred miles, or at the initial gear oil service interval, the lubricant may appear darkened by the worn-off coating. It will contain trace ferrous particles from the normal run-in of the gear teeth and bearing surfaces. This condition is expected and does not, by itself, indicate an issue with the differential or PTO gears.","document":{"url":"https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2025/MC-11026354-0001.pdf","alternate_url":"https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2025/MC-11026354-9999.pdf","confirmed":false},"url":"https://open.wenmarpro.com/bulletins/11026354","components":[{"id":"powertrain","name":"Transmission and driveline","parent":null}],"codes":[],"topics":["maintenance"],"vehicles":[{"make":"MAZDA","model":"CX-3","year_from":2016,"year_to":2021,"match":"exact","vehicle_ids":["2016_mazda_cx-3","2017_mazda_cx-3","2018_mazda_cx-3","2019_mazda_cx-3","2020_mazda_cx-3","2021_mazda_cx-3"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"CX-30","year_from":2020,"year_to":2026,"match":"exact","vehicle_ids":["2020_mazda_cx-30","2021_mazda_cx-30","2022_mazda_cx-30","2023_mazda_cx-30","2024_mazda_cx-30","2025_mazda_cx-30","2026_mazda_cx-30"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"CX-5","year_from":2017,"year_to":2025,"match":"exact","vehicle_ids":["2017_mazda_cx-5","2018_mazda_cx-5","2019_mazda_cx-5","2020_mazda_cx-5","2021_mazda_cx-5","2022_mazda_cx-5","2023_mazda_cx-5","2024_mazda_cx-5","2025_mazda_cx-5"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"CX-50","year_from":2023,"year_to":2026,"match":"exact","vehicle_ids":["2023_mazda_cx-50","2024_mazda_cx-50","2025_mazda_cx-50","2026_mazda_cx-50"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"CX-50 HYBRID","year_from":2025,"year_to":2026,"match":"base","vehicle_ids":["2025_mazda_cx-50","2026_mazda_cx-50"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"CX-70","year_from":2025,"year_to":2026,"match":"exact","vehicle_ids":["2025_mazda_cx-70","2026_mazda_cx-70"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"CX-70 PLUG-IN HYBRID","year_from":2025,"year_to":2026,"match":"base","vehicle_ids":["2025_mazda_cx-70","2026_mazda_cx-70"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"CX-9","year_from":2016,"year_to":2023,"match":"exact","vehicle_ids":["2016_mazda_cx-9","2017_mazda_cx-9","2018_mazda_cx-9","2019_mazda_cx-9","2020_mazda_cx-9","2021_mazda_cx-9","2022_mazda_cx-9","2023_mazda_cx-9"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"CX-90","year_from":2024,"year_to":2026,"match":"exact","vehicle_ids":["2024_mazda_cx-90","2025_mazda_cx-90","2026_mazda_cx-90"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"CX-90 PLUG-IN HYBRID","year_from":2024,"year_to":2026,"match":"base","vehicle_ids":["2024_mazda_cx-90","2025_mazda_cx-90","2026_mazda_cx-90"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"MAZDA3","year_from":2019,"year_to":2026,"match":"exact","vehicle_ids":["2019_mazda_mazda3","2020_mazda_mazda3","2021_mazda_mazda3","2022_mazda_mazda3","2023_mazda_mazda3","2024_mazda_mazda3","2025_mazda_mazda3","2026_mazda_mazda3"]},{"make":"MAZDA","model":"MX-5","year_from":2016,"year_to":2026,"match":"exact","vehicle_ids":["2016_mazda_mx-5","2017_mazda_mx-5","2018_mazda_mx-5","2019_mazda_mx-5","2020_mazda_mx-5","2021_mazda_mx-5","2022_mazda_mx-5","2023_mazda_mx-5","2024_mazda_mx-5","2025_mazda_mx-5","2026_mazda_mx-5"]}],"as_of":"2026-10-19","note":"A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it.
