What is wrong
Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling certain 2022 R1T vehicles. The Occupant Classification System (OCS) may not deactivate the air bag when a child or child seat occupies the front passenger seat. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
What can happen
A child in the front seat may be at a greater risk of injury in the event of a passenger air bag deployment during a crash.
The remedy
Rivian Service Centers will replace the front passenger seat, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 6, 2022. Owners may contact Rivian customer service at 1-734-855-4345. Rivian's number for this recall is FSAM-651.

Bulletins for the same vehicles and component
| RCA-78-22-015-1 | 2023-01-05. Service bulletin. Rivian is initiating a customer satisfaction campaign for some model year 2022 R1T and R1S vehicles. On these vehicles, the automatic adjustment of the steering wheel and seats to the customer’s preferred positions may become disabled due to a system incompatibility with a recent software update. Under this condition customers may need to position their steering wheel and seat manually. If the automatic adjustment functionality is lost, the driver will receive a notification on the center display indicating that the automatic seat and steering adjustment features are not available. Rivian will re-enable the automatic adjustment functionality through a software recalibration. Rivian is launching this campaign for customer satisfaction and to ensure the quality of Rivian vehicles. |

| RCA-78-22-004-1 | 2022-04-06. Service bulletin. Rivian is initiating a customer satisfaction campaign for some 2022 R1T vehicles that may experience a wire harness clip becoming unseated under the front passenger seat. If this clip becomes unseated, there is a potential for this harness to make contact with the seat track during seat movement. While this potential contact has not been observed to date in any vehicle, it could result in damage to the wires inside the harness, which includes wires connecting to the seat belt anchor pre-tensioner, the seat-mounted side airbag, occupant classification sensor (OCS), and/or other seat functions such as powered movement. Damage to the occupant protection-related wires would illuminate the airbag warning light. If unrepaired, the damage may impact performance of the seat belt anchor pretensioner and OCS. If damage to the OCS wires results in a loss of the OCS, the system defaults to a 50% male deployment profile, deploying the passenger airbag if needed. The primary function of the seat belt and its retractor pretensioner would not be affected under the damaged wire condition described above. Rivian will inspect the front passenger seat body harness edge clip and wiring, reseating the edge clip as necessary. Rivian is launching this campaign for customer satisfaction and to ensure the quality of Rivian vehicles. |
| RCA-72-22-001-1 | 2022-02-07. Service bulletin. Rivian is initiating a customer satisfaction campaign for some model year 2022 R1T vehicles that may have been built with a pinch condition of the passenger airbag wire harness in the instrument panel. If the wires are damaged the airbag light will illuminate, indicating a fault in the system. Rivian is launching this campaign for customer satisfaction and for the continuous improvement of Rivian vehicles. |
