What is wrong

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020 Super-Duty F-250, F-350, and F-550 diesel pickups. The transmission torque converter damper plate was not tempered, resulting in a brittle damper plate that may fracture and cause the engine to stall or require increased brake pedal effort in order to stop the vehicle.

What can happen

An engine stall or requiring additional braking effort to stop the vehicle can increase the risk of a crash.

The remedy

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the transmission assembly, free of charge. This recall began July 6, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S33.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Bulletins for the same vehicles and component
SSM 506362022-03-29. Service bulletin. 2011-2022 F-Super Duty and 2016-2023 F-650/F-750 vehicles equipped with a 6.7L engine may exhibit an elevated idle condition. During prolonged idle time, vehicles may experience this elevated idle to reduce unburned hydrocarbons from the SCR. The powertrain control module estimates hydrocarbon levels in the SCR and may increase idle speed to remove them. Idle speed will be increased to 1000 RPM for ambient temperatures near 26°C (80°F) and may increase to 1200 RPM at -40 °C (-40°F). Vehicles may exhibit exhaust smoke and diesel exhaust fluid smell during elevated idle condition. Exhaust smoke and smell condition will not affect reliability or durability of the engine. Power take-off (PTO) use and idle set point control will disable elevated speed. It is required that the operator monitor the vehicle and adhere to any Exhaust Filter warning messages.
SSM 505642022-03-08. Service bulletin. Some 2020-2022 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L engine may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), lack of power, and/or excessive turbo noise during operation, with diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) P003A, P0045, P0046, P0047, P0048, P0234, P0237, P0238, P132A, P2564, P2565, P2598, P259E, and/or P259F stored in the powertrain control module. If Workshop Manual (WSM) diagnostics lead to turbocharger variable vane actuator replacement, service part LC3Z-9G488-A has been released for service. Replacement of the turbocharger assembly is no longer required.
SSM 505492022-03-08. Service bulletin. Some 2018-2020 F-150, 2017-2022 F-Super Duty and 2016-2022 F-650/F-750 vehicles equipped with a diesel engine may exhibit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0000 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) after an on-demand self test. This DTC is due to a processing error in the PCM as a result of on-demand self testing. P0000 is an invalid DTC that will not illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) and no repairs should be performed.
SSM 502612021-12-07. Service bulletin. Some 2021-2022 F-Super Duty vehicles may exhibit harsh or delayed engagement/shift concerns. Most concerns may be addressed with the PCM/TCM Transmission Accelerated Main Control Break In Routine. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01, DTC Chart and/or Diagnosis By Symptom to identify the clutch(s) to be cycled. This routine cycles the shift solenoids and clutch control valves to remove contamination that may be sticking the valves and must be performed along with an adaptive learning drive cycle before attempting internal service. Although this routine was originally developed for low mileage vehicles, it has proven effective for resolving many shift and engagement symptoms across the life of the vehicle. For claiming, use causal part 7A100 and applicable labor operations in Section 7 of the Service Labor Time Standards Manual.
SSM 502602021-12-07. Service bulletin. Some 2020-2022 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 10R140 automatic transmission may exhibit a delayed engagement into drive and/or reverse on initial start-up. The condition may occur at times after sitting over night or for a couple of days. This may be due to the transmission fluid draining back from the torque converter. This is a normal characteristic of the 10R140 transmission and has no effect on durability, do not attempt to repair. Advise the customer to allow more time after first engine start-up and before shifting into gear allowing time for the torque converter to refill.
SSM 502592021-12-07. Service bulletin. 2020-2022 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 10R140 automatic transmission at times may exhibit a normal skip shift upshifting and downshifting strategy. Typical examples are 1-3 or 3-5 upshift or a 6-4 coasting downshift. This is a normal characteristic and no repairs should be attempted for this condition. For more detailed information about the 10R140 skip gear shift strategy refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01 > Diagnosis and Testing.
TSB 21-23172021-11-02. Service bulletin. Some 2020 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 10R140 automatic transmission may exhibit a harsh engagement/harsh shift/delayed shift. It is possible the vehicle may also have an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0729, P0731, P0732, P0733, P0734, P0735, P0736, P076F, P07D9, P07F7, P2700, P2701, P2702, P2703, P2704 and/or P2705 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) or transmission control module (TCM). This may be due to sticking valves in the main control valve body. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to perform the transmission accelerated main control break-in routine for the appropriate clutches and/or overhaul main control valve body.
TSB 21-23232021-09-30. Service bulletin. Some 2020 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.2L or 7.3L engine and a 10R140 transmission built on or before 1-Apr-2020 may exhibit an illuminated powertrain malfunction (wrench) indicator with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P07F7 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM) and a loss of 10th gear. The vehicle may also exhibit harsh engagements and poor shift quality. This may be due to the sleeve in the CDF clutch cylinder shifting axially causing hydraulic circuit leaks. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to replace the CDF clutch cylinder.
TSB 21-23142021-09-30. Service bulletin. Some 2020-2021 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L engine may exhibit a low-speed downshift operation concern with automatic engine braking enabled. This may be due to the software in the transmission control module (TCM). To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to reprogram the TCM and powertrain control module (PCM).
TSB 21-22482021-09-30. Service bulletin. This article supersedes TSB 21-2055 to update the Title, Issue, Action, vehicles affected and production fix date. Some 2020-2021 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L engine built on or before 10-Feb-2021 may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0300-P0308, P0603, P203B, P208B, P208C, P20EE, P2201, P24C2, P27B4, and/or P27B5 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). The vehicle may also exhibit a forced idle condition. This may be due to various strategies within the PCM software. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to reprogram the PCM.
