What is wrong
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Ford Edge and 2017 Lincoln MKZ vehicles. On vehicles with 2.0L gas engines and six-speed automatic transmissions, the torque converter weld studs may have been inadequately welded.
What can happen
If the torque converter weld studs fail, the torque converter will not be connected to the engine flexplate and the vehicle will lose the ability to move, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the torque converters, free of charge. The recall began on July 5, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17S16 (S2). Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 17V-427.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Bulletins for the same vehicles and component
| SSM 49821 | 2021-06-01. Service bulletin. Some 2015-2021 Ford and Lincoln vehicles may exhibit an illuminated MIL with diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) P0011, P0012, P0014, P0015, P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019, P0021, P0022, P0024 and/or P0025. This may be due to small debris causing the VCT solenoid to stick. Before attempting any component diagnosis or replacement of the VCT solenoid, refer to Powertrain Control and Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) pinpoint test HK11 to cycle the affected VCT solenoid 10 times to attempt to clear the debris. For claiming, use causal part 6M280 and applicable labor operations in Section 10 of the Service Labor Time Standards (SLTS) Manual. |

| TSB 19-2236 | 2019-09-06. Service bulletin. Some 2015-2018 Edge vehicles equipped with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine may exhibit a rattle noise. This may be more noticeable at idle. This may be due to a flexplate crack around the crankshaft. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to replace the flexplate, transmission fluid pump, and torque converter. Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. |
| TSB19-2158 | 2019-06-05. Service bulletin. Some 2017-2019 Fusion Hybrid/Fusion Energi/MKZ Hybrid and 2017-2018 C-Max vehicles built on or before 27-Jan-2019 may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P013A stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). This may be due to downstream oxygen sensor parameters in the PCM software. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to update the PCM software. |
| tsb18-2212 | 2018-09-10. Service bulletin. Some 2016-2018 Edge vehicles equipped with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine built on or before 12-Mar-2018 may exhibit an illuminated MIL with DTC P0036 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. |
| SSM 47170 | 2018-05-21. Service bulletin. Some vehicles may exhibit an illuminated MIL with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0011, P0012, P0014, P0015, P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019, P0021, P0022, P0024 and/or P0025. |
| TSB18-2097 | 2018-05-21. Service bulletin. Some 2016-2017 Edge vehicles equipped with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine may exhibit an illuminated MIL with DTC P0036 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. |
| SSM 46900 | 2018-01-29. Service bulletin. Some vehicles may exhibit a no start condition with an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) and a DTC P161A after PCM replacement. This may be due to the parameter reset procedure not being properly completed. To clear this DTC, use the Ford Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool or Ford J2534 Diagnostic Software, select - Toolbox - Body - Security - PATS Functions - Parameter Reset. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the procedure. This procedure will transfer the existing Key ID information between the modules without the need of having 2 programmed PATS keys present. There is no need to program keys when the PCM is going to be replaced. Additional information can be found in the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 419-01. Missing or lost keys are not warrantable. |
| tsb17-2214 | 2017-12-14. Service bulletin. Some 2017 Edge vehicles equipped with a 2.0L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engine built on or before 8-Sep-2017 may exhibit an illuminated MIL with DTC P04DB (crankcase ventilation system disconnected) in powertrain control module (PCM) memory. Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS or Ford J2534 Diagnostic Software (FJDS) release 107.03 or higher. Make sure you are connected to the internet when entering module programming to obtain the latest updates. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraftservice.com. |
| TSB 17-2072 | 2017-08-01. Service bulletin. Some 2017 C-MAX/Fusion Hybrid/Energi and MKZ Hybrid vehicles may exhibit an illuminated MIL with DTC P0071 stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). This DTC can be set after the vehicle is stored inside a warm location for several hours and then driven on a cold day. Under these conditions the PCM may see a temperature sensor concern when it first compares the ambient air temperature (AAT) sensor to other engine temperature sensors and set the DTC. Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) release 104.04 or higher. Make sure you are connected to the internet when entering module programming to obtain the latest updates. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraftservice.com. |
