What is wrong

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Lincoln MKX, and Ford Edge vehicles, manufactured June 15, 2006, to September 22, 2008, and originally sold, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Due to corrosion from salt water exposure such as from road salt use, the affected vehicles may leak fuel from the fuel tank seam weld under the tank mounting reinforcement brackets.

What can happen

A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

The remedy

Interim notices were mailed to owners on December 12, 2014. The recall began on October 6, 2015. Dealers will inspect the vehicles and either clean and treat the fuel tank with a corrosion preventative or replace the tank, free of charge. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S22.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

14S222016-07-14. Service bulletin. Fuel Tank Corrosion Inspection and Repair REASON FOR THIS PROGRAM In some of the affected vehicles that are operated in high-corrosion environments associated with road salt use, moisture and salt may become trapped under the fuel tank mounting reinforcement brackets at the four corners where the fuel tank is attached to the vehicle. Over time, corrosion under these reinforcement brackets can spread to the fuel tank which can result in a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire. Owners that operate their vehicle in a corrosive environment (e.g., where road salt is used in winter months) or have concerns about their fuel tank are eligible for a repair under this Regional Program.
