IN ADDITION, AFFECTED VEHICLES WITH AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS MAY HAVE A FUEL LINE \(1.8T ENGINES ONLY\) OR FUEL TANK VENTILATION VALVE \(4MOTION/ALL WHEEL DRIVE ONLY\) THAT CAN LEAK DUE TO FRACTURE. Built 1999\-06\-01 to 2005\-05\-31.
- [02V026000](/recalls/nhtsa/02V026000.md), 2002-01-25: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP. ON SOME PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE FUEL TANK FILLER NECK CAN SUFFER ABRASION DAMAGE IF THE REAR TIRE GOES FLAT AND THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN UNTIL THE TIRE DISINTEGRATES. Built 1997\-04\-01 to 2002\-08\-31.
- [01V157000](/recalls/nhtsa/01V157000.md), 2001-05-03: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. SULFUR IN FUEL INTERACTS WITH CERTAIN ADDITIVES FOUND IN WIDELY AVAILABLE GASOLINE CAUSING SULFUR TO BECOME DEPOSITED ON THE CONTACT POINTS OF THREE FUEL SENDING UNITS MOUNTED INSIDE THE FUEL TANK. THIS COULD CAUSE THE FUEL GAUGE TO READ FULL WHILE THE FUEL TANK MAY NOT IN FACT BE FULL OR COULD BE EMPTY. Built 1999\-09\-01 to 2000\-12\-29.

## Canada (Transport Canada), as of 2026-10-19

- [2008119](/recalls/tc/2008119.md), 2008-04-09: Fuel System. On certain Passat and Passat Four Motion vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, an underbody heat shield may become damaged. If this occurs, the heat shield may contact the exhaust system, which can result in a vehicle fire. In addition, the affected vehicles may have a fuel line \(1.8T engine only\) or fuel tank ventilation valve \(4motion / all\-wheel drive vehicles only\) that may leak due to fracture. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a vehicle fire. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs.
- [2000133](/recalls/tc/2000133.md), 2000-06-16: Fuel System. On certain Passat Four Motion, sulphur in the fuel interacting with certain additives found in widely available fuel can become deposited on certain contact points on three sending units mounted inside the fuel tank. Low electrical resistance at contact points of any unit signals that the tank is full. The accumulation of sulphur deposits on contacts would increase the resistance and erroneously signal that the tank is filled with fuel while in fact it may not be full or could be empty. If a driver is not cognizant of the miles driven and the potential driving range of their vehicle from a fuel fill, the erroneous fuel level signal could cause the vehicle to become inoperable without prior warning. Correction: Fuel sending units will be replaced with redesigned sending units.
