Service bulletins for the 2012 Toyota PRIUS

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

T-SB-0169-162018-04-02. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. TSB: NOTE Service Bulletin No. T-SB-0168-16 ?2ZR-FXE Engine Oil Consumption Inspection Procedure? MUST be performed BEFORE continuing with the procedure in this bulletin. Some 2010 ? 2014 model year Prius PHV, Prius V, and Prius vehicles equipped with the 2ZZ-FXE engine may exhibit engine oil consumption. The piston and piston ring assembly have been changed to reduce the potential for oil consumption. Follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin to address this condition.
T-SB-0168-162018-04-02. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. TSB: Some 2010 ? 2014 model year Prius, Prius V, and Prius PHV vehicles equipped with 2ZR-FXE engines may exhibit engine oil consumption. The piston and ring assembly has been redesigned to minimize oil consumption. Use the Inspection Procedure in this bulletin to confirm this condition prior to ANY repairs.
T-TT-0262-13 Rev2018-04-02. Service bulletin. ENGINE. Tech Tip: Starting with the 2010 Model Year, Toyota began a gradual transition to the use of synthetic 0w20 viscosity engine oil. There are multiple benefits of this oil including: Reduced friction and wear on engine surfaces, Improved fuel economy, Reduction in waste oil stream (in vehicles approved for 10,000 mile oil change intervals), Reduced maintenance cost (in vehicles approved for 10,000 mile oil change intervals). Due to the improved performance and durability of 0w20 synthetic oil, Toyota has extended the oil change intervals to 10,000 mile for most vehicles that require this oil. With this change, the following should be noted: The 2TR-FE (4Runner/Tacoma) and the 3UR-FBE (Flex Fuel Tundra/Sequoia) are the exceptions to this new change interval program; these engines have not been approved for the 10,000 mile interval at this time. A 5,000 mile oil change interval is still required for these vehicles. Also, the Flex Fuel 3UR-FBE requires a 2,500 mile interval when operated on E85 50% of the time or more. Only Toyota vehicles in which 0w20 oil is mandatory (except for the 2TR-FE & 3UR-FBE Engines) have been approved for extended oil change intervals. Vehicles in which 0w-20 is an option to 5w20 (or 5w30) will continue to require 5,000 mile change intervals, even if 0w20 oil is used. In case of vehicles with 10,000 mile oil change intervals, the 5,000 mile service interval has not been eliminated. The traditional 5,000 mile maintenance procedures (such as tire rotation) will continue to be required, and the fluid levels (including engine oil) will need to be checked and adjusted at this time. If the vehicle operation meets the standard criteria for "Special Operating Conditions" such as: driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, making repeated short trips under 32 degrees F, or extensive idling, the engine oil must be replaced at 5,000 mile intervals, regardless of oil used.
T-TT-0086-112018-04-02. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY; ENGINE. TechTip: Condition - The vehicle may be difficult to start or have an abnormally low or rough idle after the battery has been disconnected or power to the Engine ECM has been interrupted.
T-TT-0051-102018-04-02. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM; EQUIPMENT:APPLIANCE:AIR CONDITIONER. If a customer states there is an unpleasant odor in the vehicle from the HVAC system, there are various factors that may be involved.

For vehicles that are used under certain severe operating conditions, the HV Battery Cooling Fan may experience an excessive buildup of dust, lint, or other debris that can reduce the efficiency of the HV Battery Cooling System. HV Battery Cooling Fan maintenance and cleaning should be performed to address this condition.
T-TT-0432-17_Rev2018-04-02. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM. TT: Rev2 Some Customers may complain about a Hybrid Vehicle Battery cooling system warning message. This warning message may appear when the HV Battery cooling system loses efficiency due to debris on the filter and or some object obstructing the air inlet. Refer to the information below to address this issue.
T-SB-0033-142018-04-02. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:HOSES/LINES/PIPING/FITTINGS. Some vehicles in particular geographic areas may exhibit a condition where the HVAC Evaporator Drain Hose has become obstructed with an insect nest. An insect repellent drain hose tip (ARINIX® Tip) is now available to help minimize future occurrences of this environmental condition. For some models, a new drain hose is required to properly fit the ARINIX® Tip. Follow the procedures in this bulletin for proper handling and installation of this optional service part.
