Service bulletins for the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu
A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician of a complaint of a sag or hesitation when accelerating. The concern is present when coasting at low speeds of less than 15 miles per hour and then aggressively applying the throttle, or after making a hard stop followed by an aggressive throttle. This is considered normal operation of the vehicle the throttle is delayed and opened slowly up to .7 seconds to help minimize driveline lash and clunking or will have approximately .5 seconds of zero torque to allow the transmission to shift to first gear. |

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about gasoline powered cars, mid-size trucks, light duty trucks, and heavy duty trucks with premature catalytic converter failures. It is recommended to inspect for a poor crimp on the grounds ring terminal at the engine block for the bank with the concern and repair the wire. |
| PIP5300 | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT:APPLIANCE:AIR CONDITIONER; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on the steps to diagnose and repair vehicles that engine overheating, and/or poor heater performance, AC off message, and Malfunction Indicator Lamp illumination. Technician will find Diagnostic Trouble Code P00B7 and/or P2181. Technician will gain access to the water outlet assembly and inspect for flashing or debris. If flashing or debris found in the water outlet assembly it will need to be replaced. Also inspect the upper heater core hose and coolant bypass pipe at the water outlet for a black plug. If plug is found, remove and discard. |
| PIT4943D | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE; FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P0442. Technician will need to review Techlink article from May 2013 titled "Using the Evaporative Emissions System Tester" Technician will need to follow these steps to help diagnose the issue. First after the P0442 has been verified do not disturb any of the fuel system components. The technician now can use the scan tool to close the Evaporative Emissions System. If possible change the tank pressure sensor units from inch_H2O to milimeter_Hg for better resolution. Now the vehicle can be stared to monitor the tank pressure sensor output value for approximately two minutes. If the tank pressure sensor value does change, pressurize the fuel tank side of the purge solenoid with the GE 41413-A / J 41413-A and the necessary adaptors. Now add smoke and allow pressure to stabilize for 2 minutes. If smoke is allowed to pass through the purge solenoid, replace the purge solenoid. If the tank pressure sensor value does not change, then install CH-48096 adaptor between the purge line from the canister and the purge solenoid. With the Evaporative Emissions System closed, pressurize the system through the CH-48096 adaptor and allow the system to completely stabilize, by observing the Press / Vac Gauge for a minimum of 5 minutes. Now add smoke to the system with GE 41413-A / J 41413-A after system stabilization. Now inspect the purge solenoid, engine side, fuel cap, canister vent solenoid filter and any line quick connects. When the leak is unable to be located, test under a vacuum condition. his type of leak may be detected by using the scan tool Purge/Seal function to create a vacuum in the Evaporative Emissions System and then observe the FTP sensor parameter for vacuum decay. |
| PIP4548E | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM. This Preliminary Information communication advises the technician what to inspect if codes P0016 and/or P0017 are setting on a properly timed engine or a condition of the vehicle cranks but will not start. Technician should inspect the respective intake or exhaust camshaft reluctor to see if it has spun on the camshaft. The reluctor cannot be repositioned so the camshaft must be replaced. The new camshafts come with the reluctor already pressed on in the correct position. |
| PIP5163B | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY; FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE; ENGINE. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about engine block that have a possible cylinder bore damage, scoring or out of round as the possible cause of engine oil consumption, misfire, cylinder leakage or blow by. Technician will need to inspect the engine for Cylinder damage or scoring, an out of round cylinder bore, Dirt intrusion, and Catalytic Converter failure. |
| PIP5247 | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY; ENGINE. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code P06DE set in the Engine Control Module. Technician must follow published Service Information diagnostics for P06DE. If diagnostics lead to removing the oil pan or engine oil pressure is below specification when hot, to inspect the oil piston nozzles for damage. Technician should replace the broken oil nozzle(s) as long as the engine does not have any damage which warrants engine replacement. |
| PIP5029F | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. ENGINE. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Malfunction Indicator Lamp on or engine misfire, rough idle, extended crank, or crank no start in some cases. Technician will need to perform published Service Information diagnostics. If technician finds carbon an upper engine and valve cleaning should be performed. |
| PIC6040 | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; ENGINE. | PIP5282 | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. This Preliminary Information communication advises the technician about the calculation and operation of the engine oil life monitor. The monitor calculates the percent of oil life remaining, based on 3 pathways. The first pathway for oil life calculation is engine revolutions. The second pathway for oil life calculation is the mileage form the last rest for all General Motors powertrains except the Volt. The third pathway for oil life calculation is the amount of time the oil is in the engine. The Volt uses a 2 year timer instead of 1 year. It also uses the engine revolution counter. It does not use the mileage pathway to count down. |
| G-174372 | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. 13283 - Service Update. An analysis of engine build data revealed that there could be a durability issue with the engines originally installed in these vehicles. To ensure the highest quality and best ownership experience for our customers, these engines need to be replaced prior to vehicle delivery. This bulletin provides a service procedure to replace the engine assembly on certain vehicles equipped with 4 cylinder engine (RPO LCV or LKW). Due to a casting error, these vehicles may have engine pistons that are dimensionally incorrect. Over time, contact between the cylinder valves and the piston could result in engine noise, rough running and/or bent valves. |
