Service bulletins for the 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche
A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

| PIP4138L | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. EQUIPMENT:MECHANICAL; POWER TRAIN. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp on, engine misfire, and/or engine noise. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0300-P0308. If published Service Information diagnostics does not isolate the cause of this concern technician should check for a worn camshaft lobe and/or lifter roller, a sticking valve, valve leakage, a broken valve spring, and a collapsed active fuel management lifter. |
| PIT4505F | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a rattle, buzz, tick, or vibration type noise that appears to be coming from the center of the dash. Technician will adjust the transmission dipstick tube away from the front of cowl to provide additional clearance. |
| PIP3720D | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician with the axel setup information from American Axle Manufacturing. Technician should be advised that the maximum pinion shim to be used or stacked behind the pinion is 0.050?, and the minimum pinion shim is 0.020? for an 8.6 axle. The range for available pinion depth shims for the 10.5? axle is 0.006? to 0.024?. When setting the backlash it should be set between 0.003? to 0.005? on a new ring and pinion for any American Axle Manufacturing application. The ring and pinion can be reused or adjusted if the mileage is less than 500 miles, if not used for towing. Technician should be advised that a ?roller coaster? or ?hourglass? pattern on the bearings may be normal up to 10,000 miles and possibly longer. With a mis-machined housing you may get a heel pattern on both sides of the gear teeth at build up can generally be corrected with backlash adjustments. When setting up an 8.6? axle with a 5 cut gear set is to use a 0.035? pinion shim and set backlash to 0.004?. When using the newer 2 cut gear set also use a 0.035? pinion shim and still set backlash to 0.004?. To set the gear pattern use backlash to adjust the pattern heel to toe. Use the pinion shim to adjust the height of the pattern. The proper drive pinion bearing pre-load is from 15 - 30 inch pounds with new bearings. The total torque to turn after the differential case is installed should increase 5 - 10 inch pounds at the pinion. A new pinion nut must be used whenever the old one is removed. The axle shaft end play specification is 0.012? per side and the radial specification is 0.002? - 0.003?. Technician should be advised that synthetic lube can be used in all new American Axle Manufacturing axle assemblies. The new pinion seal for the 8.6? axle assembly is a two piece design. |
| PIP5071 | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION; POWER TRAIN. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicle that has a squawk or grunt type noise when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. Technician should replace the 3-4 clutch Friction and Steel Clutch Plates along with the Apply Plate and Selective Backing Plate. |
| PIP4681D | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:TORQUE CONVERTER. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have a random bump, chuggle, or fishbite sensation when crowding the throttle slightly with the Torque Converter Clutch on while cruising at 35-60 miles per hour. Technician should follow all published Service Information diagnostics if the concern is repaired compare to a like vehicle with the same options. |
| PIP4765A | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:CONTROL MODULE (TCM/PCM/TECM); ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician on the steps to diagnose and repair vehicles that may have Service Engine Soon Malfunction Indicator Lamp on and a constant engine misfire. If Service Information diagnosis isolates no compression on the misfiring cylinder(s) with 100% leakage into the crankcase, perform the following steps as necessary before disassembling the engine. Technician will use a lighted bore scope if available to inspect the top of the related piston(s) through the spark plug hole to determine if any of the pistons are melted. If damaged piston(s) are found inspect for aftermarket parts. Also use the latest version of 09-06-04-026 to verify if there are aftermarket calibrations in the Engine Control Module. Take photos and document accordingly if anything is found. |
| PIP4112N | 2017-08-15. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION; POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:TORQUE CONVERTER. This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician of a complaint of a sag or hesitation when accelerating. The concern is present when coasting at low speeds of less than 15 miles per hour and then aggressively applying the throttle, or after making a hard stop followed by an aggressive throttle. This is considered normal operation of the vehicle the throttle is delayed and opened slowly up to .7 seconds to help minimize driveline lash and clunking or will have approximately .5 seconds of zero torque to allow the transmission to shift to first gear. |
| PIP4568R | 2017-03-14. Service bulletin. POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION; ENGINE; EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY. THIS PRELIMINARY INFORMATION COMMUNICATION PROVIDES INFORMATION TO THE TECHNICIAN THAT SOME VEHICLES MAY HAVE A SERVICE ENGINE SOON LAMP, ENGINE MISFIRE ON CYLINDER 1, 4, 6, OR 7 AND/OR TICK NOISE. TECHNICIAN WILL FOLLOW SERVICE INFORMATION DIAGNOSIS FIRST. IF SERVICE INFORMATION DIAGNOSIS DOES NOT ISOLATE THE CAUSE OF THIS CONCERN PERFORM A CYLINDER DEACTIVATION ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM COMPRESSION TEST IN SERVICE INFORMATION. IF THE RUNNING COMPRESSION OF THE MISFIRING CYLINDER STAYS BELOW 25 POUNDS PER SQUARE INCH REGARDLESS OF THE ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT SOLENOID BEING COMMANDED ON OR OFF, AN ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT LIFTER IS MECHANICALLY COLLAPSED/STUCK OR UNLOCKING AS SOON AS THE ENGINE IS STARTED. REPLACE ALL ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT LIFTERS, AND ALL PLASTIC LIFTER GUIDES. ALSO PERFORM THE CYLINDER DEACTIVATION ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT VALVE LIFTER OIL MANIFOLD DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING IN SERVICE INFORMATION. IF IT ISOLATES A CONCERN WITH THE VALVE LIFTER OIL MANIFOLD, REPLACE IT AND REEVALUATE THE CONCERN. THE ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT LIFTERS CAN ALSO BE MONITORED FOR PROPER OPERATION BY CAREFULLY INSPECTING THE CYLINDER 1, 4, 6, AND 7 ROCKERS AND VALVES WHILE CRANKING OR BRIEFLY AND SAFELY RUNNING THE ENGINE WITH THE VALVE COVERS REMOVED. IF THE VALVE OR VALVES OF AN ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT CYLINDER STOP MOVING WHILE DOING THIS TEST, THE ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT LIFTER IS CAUSING THE CONCERN. FOR 2008-2009 FULL SIZE TRUCK/SUV OR A 2007-2009 CHEVROLET TAHOE WITH THE POLICE PACKAGE REPROGRAM THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. ON THE 2008-2009 PONTIAC G8, 2010-2011 CAMARO, AND 2007-2010 FULL SIZE TRUCKS WITH ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT, ALSO DETERMINE IF THE ACTIVE FUEL MANAGEMENT PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE SHIELD THAT IS LISTED IN THE LATEST VERSION OF 10-06-01-008 HAS EVER BEEN INSTALLED. ON PASSENGER CARS WITH THE LS4 ENGINE, DETERMINE IF THE UPDATED OIL PAN GASKET THAT IS LISTED IN THE LATEST VERSION OF 11-06-01-007 HAS BEEN INSTALLED. |
