# Service bulletin SA\-044\-23

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

- Type: Service bulletin
- NHTSA id: 10240492
- Published by NHTSA: 2023\-08\-05
- Manufacturer's number: SA\-044\-23
- Manufacturer's date: 2023\-07\-28
- NHTSA component: SUSPENSION

## NHTSA's summary

Some customers have reported experiencing a one\-time popping or clunking sound while driving their vehicle. The noise is most noticeable when duplicating the driving conditions of going up or down an incline while simultaneously making a turn. NOTE: For Mazda6 vehicles, the noise may only be heard once per day. To reproduce the concern, allow the vehicle to sit overnight and then drive it. The noise has been traced to the front stabilizer \(sway bar\) bushings and the recommended action is the following repair information \(if the noise can be duplicated\). NOTE: The repair itself is not complex, but accurately replicating the concern may require additional time. To minimize inconvenience to the customer, ensure that they are provided with a loaner vehicle while the diagnosis and repair take place.

- [SA\-051\-25](/bulletins/11026350.md), 2025-12-05, Service bulletin: STEERING; SUSPENSION; POWER TRAIN; WHEELS. Noise, Vibration, and Harshness \(NVH\) Diagnostic Guidelines Diagnostic Guidelines When diagnosing NVH concerns, it is essential to first classify the issue into one of three primary categories: Noise, Vibration, or Harshness. Many customer complaints may involve overlapping symptoms, such as both noise and vibration, so identifying the dominant characteristic is critical. Once the primary symptom is determined, follow the appropriate diagnostic path. For example, if a concern includes both noise and vibration but is related to vehicle speed, the vibration diagnostic path should be followed. When considering component replacement during the diagnostic process, it is best practice to start with the lowest cost or most accessible part unless diagnostic evidence clearly identifies a more expensive or complex component as the root cause. This approach helps minimize repair costs and avoids unnecessary part replacements. For example, a growling or bearing whine noise may be mistakenly attributed to internal components in the differential, transfer unit, or transmission, when the actual source is a wheel bearing. Misdiagnosis like this can lead to unnecessary repairs, added time and cost. To help prevent this, always follow the guidelines in the repair procedure.
- [SA\-013\-24](/bulletins/10251369.md), 2024-03-06, Service bulletin: WHEELS; SUSPENSION; TIRES. Some vehicles may exhibit a steering shimmy or body vibration during the PDI test drive or during the first few miles of driving after the vehicle has been delivered to the customer due to flat spots on the tires. Flat spots on tires may be caused by improper maintenance during dealer storage \(e.g.: Vehicle was left stationary for a prolonged period of time in high ambient temperatures\).
- [02\-003\-23](/bulletins/10244671.md), 2023-11-01, Service bulletin: SUSPENSION. Some customers may complain of signs of oil on the struts or shock absorbers. In most cases the oil that is present is normal, and a result of the oil that remains on the shaft during the normal sweeping process of the shaft seal. Follow the inspection guidelines below to determine if the condition is a result of the normal sweeping process or a failure of the shaft seal.
- [02\-004\-22a](/bulletins/10226814.md), 2022-12-02, Service bulletin: SUSPENSION.
- [02\-002\-22](/bulletins/10217210.md), 2022-08-04, Service bulletin: SUSPENSION. Some customers may complain about oil seepage or oil leakage from the rear shock absorbers. This concern may be due to a lack of sealing performance. To eliminate the oil seepage/leakage, the rear shock absorbers production process has been modified.
- [02\-004\-22](/bulletins/10213185.md), 2022-06-04, Service bulletin: SUSPENSION.
- [02\-002/22](/bulletins/10209781.md), 2022-04-05, Service bulletin: EQUIPMENT; SUSPENSION; EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY. Some customers may complain about oil seepage or oil leakage from the rear shock absorbers. This concern may be due to a lack of sealing performance. To eliminate the oil seepage/leakage, the rear shock absorbers production process has been modified.
- [SA\-006\-22](/bulletins/10208564.md), 2022-03-04, Service bulletin: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING; POWER TRAIN. There have been warranty claims submitted for growling or bearing whine noise in differentials, transfer units and transmissions where the source of the noise was a wheel bearing. This misdiagnosis can lead to multiple repair attempts, warranty debits, and additional inconvenience and/or cost to the customer. To reduce the chance of this occurring, please follow the steps outlined in the repair procedure.
- [02\-001\-21\-3766](/bulletins/10186697.md), 2021-02-05, Service bulletin: SUSPENSION. Some customers may complain about oil seepage or oil leakage from the rear shock absorbers. This concern may be due to a lack of sealing performance. To eliminate the oil seepage/leakage, the rear shock absorbers production process has been modified.
- [02\-007\-20\-3729](/bulletins/10180597.md), 2020-10-02, Service bulletin: SUSPENSION. Some customers may complain about oil seepage or oil leakage from the rear shock absorbers. This concern may be due to a lack of sealing performance. To eliminate the oil seepage/leakage, the rear shock absorbers production process has been modified.
