# Service bulletin SSM 51601

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

- Type: Service bulletin
- NHTSA id: 10236029
- Published by NHTSA: 2023\-05\-24
- Manufacturer's number: SSM 51601
- Manufacturer's date: 2023\-05\-05
- NHTSA component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL; TRAILER HITCHES

## NHTSA's summary

Some 2021\-2023 F\-150 and 2022\-2023 F\-Super Duty/Expedition/Navigator/Maverick vehicles equipped with an integrated trailer module \(iTRM\) may exhibit a trailer lamp fault message with various related diagnostic trouble codes \(DTC\). Most trailer emulator testers will not draw enough current to correctly diagnose these concerns. They may be used to diagnose basic functionality of the iTRM, however, some trailer emulator testers may cause false trailer lamp fault messages to appear. The customer's trailer should be used for diagnosis instead of a trailer emulator tester. Refer to Workshop Manual \(WSM\), Section 417\-01 for normal diagnostics.

## Other bulletins for the same vehicles and component

- [SSM 55239](/bulletins/11038444.md), 2026-10-13, Service bulletin: UNKNOWN OR OTHER; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; SERVICE BRAKES. Some 2023\-2026 F\-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a trailer brake control module and built on or before 08\-May\-2026 may exhibit a "Trailer Disconnected" message after cycling the ignition off and back on with a trailer connected. This may be due to the presence of an integrated battery charger on a trailer equipped with electric over hydraulic brakes. If trailer functionality is restored after unplugging and plugging the trailer connector back in while the ignition is on, this condition can be corrected by downloading and performing the "Trailer Brake Configuration" application using the latest software version of the Ford Diagnosis and Repair System \(FDRS\) scan tool. For claiming, use causal part 19H332 and labor operations 12651D and 12651D4. NOTE: This bulletin has been updated, refer to the change log at the bottom for details. Issue: Some of the vehicles listed in the Model statement above may exhibit all of the following conditions: • Poor shift quality • Illuminated powertrain malfunction \(wrench\) indicator with DTCs P2704 and P0771 stored in the PCM / TCM . This may be due to a calibration in the TCM and/or wear between the input shaft and the E clutch hub causing theinput shaft O\-rings to become damaged resulting in an open E clutch circuit. Action: For vehicles that meet all of the criteria in the Issue and Model statements, follow the Service Procedure toreprogram the PCM / TCM and/or replace the E clutch hub and input shaft O\-rings
- [SSM 55221](/bulletins/11038438.md), 2026-10-12, Service bulletin: UNKNOWN OR OTHER; POWER TRAIN; ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. For 20222026 vehicles equipped with a 8F35 transmission, a revision to the Road Testing Vehicle procedure has been made in the WSM, Section 307\-01 \> Diagnosis and Testing. This updated procedure improves the diagnosis of customer reported transmission concerns and aids in locating the proper root cause. During diagnosis and testing, details regarding whether the condition is more prevalent when the vehicle is hot or cold, throttle percentage at the time of occurrence, vehicle speed, the specific shift involved, and whether the issue occurs during transmission engagements \(N\>R, N\>D, R\>D, and/or D\>R\) should be noted in the warranty claim. Engineering requests including these detailed operating conditions that will significantly assist with root cause analysis. Diagnosis, testing, and repair should use established labor times outside this article.

Some 2022\-2024 Maverick hybrid vehicles may exhibit various electrical symptoms and/or a no crank/no start condition related to an intermittent 12V battery drain that has discharged the 12V battery. This may be due to the software in the anti\-lock brake system \(ABS\) module. To correct this condition, download and run the "ABS \- Anti\-lock Brake System \(ABS\) Module Software Update" and "ACCM \- Air Conditioning Control Module \(ACCM\) Software Update" applications using the latest software level of the Ford Diagnosis and Repair System \(FDRS\) scan tool. For claiming use causal part 2005 and labor operations 10654C and 12651D along with MT2005SSM up to 0.7 hours for the ABS, ACCM, PCM, and SOBDMC as needed.

Some 2022\-2024 Maverick Hybrid vehicles may exhibit an intermittent vibration and/or crunching noise after a cold start while the engine is running with the vehicle stationary in drive with no throttle input and brakes applied. An intermittent engine rocking or rolling motion in one direction may also be observed while the concern is present with the hood open.\<br /\>\<br /\> The noise may be present with no drivability concerns, relevant diagnostic trouble codes \(DTC\) stored, warning indicators illuminated and/or warning messages displayed.
