# Service bulletin TSB 20\-2272

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

- Type: Service bulletin
- NHTSA id: 10179149
- Published by NHTSA: 2020\-09\-02
- Manufacturer's number: TSB 20\-2272
- Manufacturer's date: 2020\-08\-19
- NHTSA component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

## NHTSA's summary

Some 2015\-2019 Transit vehicles equipped with a 3.2L engine, 2018\-2020 F\-150 vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine, 2017\-2020 Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L engine built on or after 13\-May\-2017 may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp \(MIL\) with diagnostic trouble code \(DTC\) P2002 stored in the powertrain control module \(PCM\). This may be due to a crack in the diesel particulate filter \(DPF\) substrate. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to replace the DPF.

Some 2020\-2026 Aviator/Explorer/F\-150/Bronco/Ranger vehicles equipped with a 2.7L or 3.0L \(non\-diesel\) engine may need the front engine cover removed and reinstalled for various reasons. The Workshop Manual \(WSM\), Section 303\-01 Engine \> Removal and Installation \> Engine Front Cover service procedure has been updated to include a new essential special service tool \(ESST\) guide pin alignment tool \(303\-1790\) that is used to align the engine front cover to the engine block, preventing the O\-ring seal on the engine oil galley feed tube from getting damaged during installation.

This may be due to the vehicles diesel oxidation catalyst \(DOC\) age counter being under the 120\-minute age requirement. There is an all\-new "PCM Catalytic Converter Age Evaluation" application within the latest version of the Ford Diagnosis and Repair System \(FDRS\). Use this new FDRS application to determine the age \(in minutes\) of the DOC. If the age is less than 120 minutes, perform manual regenerations to increase the catalyst age counter to satisfy the monitor age requirement. If further assistance is needed, contact the technical assistance center \(TAC\). Note: this article only applies to the EGS monitor. Some of the vehicles listed in the Model statement above may exhibit an upper engine ticking or tapping noise at idle. Customers may also report experiencing rough engine performance, engine misfire, or a malfunction indicator lamp \(MIL\) with diagnostic trouble code \(DTC\) P0301\-P0308 in the powertrain control module \(PCM\). This may be due to camshaft and/or valve tappet having excess wear within the engine assembly.

This noise may occur on initial start\-up after a cold soak of 6 hours or more that may last for 2\-5 seconds. This may be due to an internal component of the variable cam timing \(VCT\) unit. If diagnostics lead to the VCTs as the source of the noise, refer to the 2024 F\-150 Workshop Manual \(WSM\), Section 303\-00 \> Diagnosis and Testing \> Engine \> Pinpoint Test F. Pinpoint test F has been updated to include additional steps along with a video on how to identify the single affected VCT unit that requires replacement.
