# Service bulletin MT\-002\-19

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

- Type: Service bulletin
- NHTSA id: 10165676
- Published by NHTSA: 2019\-10\-04
- Manufacturer's number: MT\-002\-19
- Manufacturer's date: 2019\-09\-30
- NHTSA component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE

## NHTSA's summary

If an engine assembly is replaced after a catastrophic internal mechanical failure, clean the intake manifold internally before installing a replacement engine assembly. If the intake manifold is not cleaned properly, the replacement engine may fail prematurely. Metallic debris from the old engine \(with catastrophic internal mechanical failure\) may rest inside the intake manifold. When the new engine assembly is installed, debris in the intake manifold will be ingested into the new engine and cause internal damage.

## Other bulletins for the same vehicles and component

- [01\-013\-21\-3753](/bulletins/10202686.md), 2021-10-31, Service bulletin: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE; EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY; EQUIPMENT. Some vehicles may have coolant leaks at the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold \(as shown below\). There may be cracks at the stud bolt hole \(1\) or at the outside of the exhaust manifold \(2\). Cracks may be caused by: Deformation of the exhaust manifold during usage causing unexpected force to certain areas of the cylinder head. Residual stress generated during production in the cylinder head material may be greater than expected. The external force from the exhaust system when driving over bumps may cause unexpected force to certain areas of the cylinder head. To eliminate this concern, the design of the exhaust manifold gasket and the cylinder head has been modified to reduce the force on the cylinder head.
- [RF\-18\-03](/bulletins/10145240.md), 2018-10-09, Service bulletin: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE. EXHAUST PIPE GASKET OPEN END: There has been some concern with the open end of hoop design being considered a defect in the gasket for P/N AJ17\-40\-305. The end of this ?hoop? is intentionally modified to press fix the gasket on the exhaust pipe. NOTE: The ?hoop? might become larger during shipping, but you can still use it by pressing this portion down when installing.
- [01\-001\-18\-3419a](/bulletins/10144325.md), 2018-09-10, Service bulletin: ENGINE; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE; PARKING BRAKE:DRIVELINE:HYDRAULIC:ACTUATOR. After parking the vehicle at temperatures below the freezing, some customers may experience a lack of power with the check engine light on and DTC P0638:00 and/or P2112:00 stored in memory. \- P0638:00: Throttle valve actuator control range/performance problem \(one drive cycle DTC\) \- P2112:00: Throttle valve actuator motor current range/performance problem \(one drive cycle DTC\) This concern may be caused by condensed water in the intake manifold entering the throttle valve. After parking at temperatures below freezing, the throttle valve may be frozen at the stand\-by position, resulting in the symptom. To prevent this concern, the control logic of the PCM has been modified to avoid frozen the throttle valve \(by moving the valve at a certain time after the ignition has been turned off\). NOTE: With this modification, the main relay may stay on up to 90 minutes after the ignition switch is turned off. "BATTERY INSPECTION" in the Workshop Manual will be modified to properly check the battery parasitic draw after this modification.

MAZDA: MIL COMES ON WITH P2004/CHECK VALVE STUCK OPEN. SOME VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE AN MIL THAT COMES ON WITH DTC P2004 \(VARIABLE TUMBLE SHUTTER VALVE STUCK OPEN\).
