# Service bulletin SSM 47823

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

- Type: Service bulletin
- NHTSA id: 10155574
- Published by NHTSA: 2019\-04\-01
- Manufacturer's number: SSM 47823
- Manufacturer's date: 2019\-02\-22
- NHTSA component: POWER TRAIN

## NHTSA's summary

Various 2013\-2019 vehicles may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp \(MIL\) with diagnostic trouble code \(DTC\) P264F after powertrain control module \(PCM\) replacement. This DTC indicates that the engine serial number \(ESN\) must be programmed into the PCM. The ESN is located on PTS\> OASIS\> Features\> Engine Serial Number. Once the ESN is obtained from the historical vehicle bill of materials \(HvBOM\), it can be programmed into the PCM using the appropriate Ford diagnostic scan tool. Navigate to the toolbox tab\> powertrain menu\> Service Functions\> ESN.

Some 2013\-2016 Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L diesel engine and 2015\-2019 Transit vehicles equipped with a 3.2L diesel engine may not pass a state smog test due to the exhaust gas system \(EGS\) monitor that will not run after completing the exhaust gas sensor drive cycle located within Section 2 of the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnostics \(PC/ED\) Manual \> Drive Cycles. This may be due to the vehicles diesel oxidation catalyst \(DOC\) age counter being under the 120\-minute age requirement. There is an all\-new "PCM Catalytic Converter Age Evaluation" application within the latest version of the Ford Diagnosis and Repair System \(FDRS\). Use this new FDRS application to determine the age \(in minutes\) of the DOC. If the age is less than 120 minutes, perform manual regenerations to increase the catalyst age counter to satisfy the monitor age requirement. If further assistance is needed, contact the technical assistance center \(TAC\). Note: this article only applies to the EGS monitor. Problems with other vehicle monitors not running successfully must be addressed using normal diagnostics located i

During service and repair requiring removal and replacement of a crankshaft bolt and/or crankshaft damper, achieving proper torque of the crankshaft pulley bolt is critical. Incorrect torque may allow the bolt to loosen resulting in the timing gear breaking and engine damage. Replacement of the bolt is critical to the repair and accurately following the installation procedure in the Workshop Manual \(WSM\) Section, 303\-01 is extremely important. The bolt torque procedure can be found in the crankshaft front seal removal and installation procedure or in the engine assembly procedure.

- [SSM 51691](/bulletins/10237789.md), 2023-06-16, Service bulletin: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM; POWER TRAIN. 2011\-2023 F\-Super Duty and 2016\-2024 F\-650/F\-750 vehicles equipped with a 6.7L engine may exhibit an elevated idle condition. During prolonged idle time, vehicles may experience this elevated idle to reduce unburned hydrocarbons from the SCR. The powertrain control module estimates hydrocarbon levels in the SCR and may increase idle speed to remove them. Idle speed will be increased to 1000 RPM for ambient temperatures near 26°C \(80°F\) and may increase to 1200 RPM at \-40 °C \(\-40°F\). Vehicles may exhibit exhaust smoke and diesel exhaust fluid smell during elevated idle condition. Exhaust smoke and smell condition will not affect reliability or durability of the engine. Power take\-off \(PTO\) use and idle set point control will disable elevated speed. It is required that the operator monitor the vehicle and adhere to any Exhaust Filter warning messages.

Some 2015\-2019 F\-Super Duty vehicles may experience a transmission fluid leak from a cracked transmission case or transmission fluid pan. This may be due to a driveline vibration condition. For vehicles that have a concern with a cracked transmission case \(Figures 1\-2\) or fluid pan \(Figures 3\-4\), the rear driveline imbalance most often is the root cause of this concern. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to replace the rear driveline.

Some 2017\-2019 F\-Super Duty/F\-650/F\-750 vehicles may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp \(MIL\) with diagnostic trouble code \(DTC\) P24D1 stored in the powertrain control module \(PCM\). To correct the condition, replace the particulate matter \(PM\) sensor. Refer to Workshop Manual \(WSM\), Section 303\-14. For F\-650/F\-750 vehicles, use LC4Z\-5L216\-A. For F\-Super Duty pickup and 203 inch wheelbase chassis cab vehicles, use LC3Z\-5L216\-C. For F\-Super Duty 145/179/192 inch wheelbase chassis cab vehicles, use LC3Z\-5L216\-B. For F\-Super Duty 168/169/193/205 inch wheelbase chassis cab vehicles, use LC3Z\-5L216\-A. Do not attempt a programmable module installation \(PMI\) after installation of the PM sensor. For claiming, use causal part 5L239 and applicable labor operations in Section 10 of the Service Labor Time Standards \(SLTS\) Manual.
