Service bulletin SSPA6

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

NHTSA's summary

Special Service Program (SSP) A6 - 2016 CX-5 Passenger Frontal Air Bag Concern - MDRT TOOL RETURN. On July 12th, 2018, Mazda Technical Services sent out an email extending the Mazda Diagnostic Reprogramming Tool (MDRT) service loaner program for Special Service Program (SSPA6) for an additional 7 months to improve the low completion rate for campaign SSPA6. As previously advised the MDRT Tool loaner software is expiring at the end of February 2019. New MDRT tools are being prepared to reprogram the Airbag Control Module for those vehicles that remain unrepaired. These tools will replace the MDRT currently at your dealership for this SSP. Action required: All dealers must return their MDRT SSPA6 Tool to Mazda with a Warranty Part Return Shipping label by February 28, 2019. Any MDRT SSPA6 Tool not returned to Mazda by that time will incur a $1,000.00 missing tool charge.

SSPA6 FCa2025-05-05. Service campaign. Mazda Motor Corporation has decided to conduct a Special Service Program (SSP) on certain 2016 CX-5 vehicles built from November 1, 2014 through May 13, 2016. If you are a recipient of this notice, your vehicle is included in Special Service Program (SSP) A6. What is the problem? Certain 2016 CX-5 vehicles were evaluated under NHTSA’s new frontal oblique crash test, and the evaluation revealed that the fabric of the passenger frontal air bag may be torn during deployment of the air bag. NHTSA performed a frontal oblique crash being evaluated for inclusion in the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). The NCAP test being evaluated is not a requirement of the current vehicle safety regulations or NCAP ratings, but will be used for NCAP safety ratings for future model year vehicles. Even though 2016 CX-5 vehicles fully satisfy the current vehicle safety regulations, we are conducting the SSP to minimize any potential safety risk. Action required: As previously advised the MDRT Tool loaner software expired July 15, 2020. All dealers must return their MDRT SSPA6 Tool to Mazda with a Warranty Part Return Shipping label by August 21, 2020. Any MDRT SSPA6 Tool not returned to Mazda by that time will incur a $1,000.00 missing tool charge. New Mazda dealers that do not have this tool, please fill out the Dealer Recall Help form on MXConnect > Warranty to advise you do not have the tool.
