NHTSA's summary
BMW Thermostat Part Number 11 53 8 635 689 (Update 21). With a large supply currently in transit, we are now raising the maximum ordering quantity to 5 per day. Over 1,200 backorders have been released and should be prepped to ship today. Any orders placed over 5 pcs per day will be cancelled. Currently there are 387 pcs on backorders with 1,895 pcs showing in dealer inventory. There are also 9,991 pcs in transit to the US RDCs; Please use locator for car down situations. Dealer orders are reviewed and released in the order received regardless of order type (Stock Order, VOR order, Late Day VOR). The oldest backorder is dated 9/06/2016. Please remove this part number from automatic replenishment and SRD ordering and only order for car down situations.
