# Service bulletin SSM 47230

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

- Published by NHTSA: 2018\-05\-21
- Manufacturer's number: SSM 47230

## NHTSA's summary

Some 2007\-2016 Edge/MKX/Flex/MKT/MKZ/MKS/Taurus/Police Interceptor Sedan/Explorer/Police Interceptor Utility vehicles equipped with AWD and built on or before 30\-Jun\-2016 may exhibit a propane or natural gas odor during idle or low speed driving. This may be due to break down of the power transfer unit \(PTU\) fluid caused by excessive heat. If the source of the odor is identified as originating from the PTU, an idler bearing repair kit is available to repair the PTU. Refer to the Workshop Manual \(WSM\), Section 308\-07. If the PTU is determined to be repairable, utilize kit GB5Z\-7P258\-A and the included instruction sheet. For claiming use causal part 7P258 and applicable labor operations in section 07 of the Service Labor Time Standards \(SLTS\) Manual.

- [TSB 26\-2171](/bulletins/11031490.md), 2026-04-22, Service bulletin: ENGINE. This article updates TSB 25\-2154. Reasons for update: \*Parts List \*Service Procedure to replace the output planetary carrier assembly \*Added 2023\-2024 model year vehicles Some of the vehicles listed in the Model statement above may exhibit all of the following conditions: Shudder condition, most noticeable at speeds below 60 mph \(100 km/h\) No relevant diagnostic trouble codes \(DTC\) present Traceable shudder event with IDS/FDRS reading \*\(Figure 1\)\* This condition may be perceived/felt as an engine misfire. This may be due to a concern with the output planetary assembly.
- [SSM 54275](/bulletins/11024271.md), 2025-10-14, Service bulletin: ENGINE. Some 2021\-2023 Explorer vehicles equipped with a 3.0L EcoBoost engine, 2021\-2023 Aviator vehicles equipped with a 3.0L EcoBoost or 3.0L plug\-in hybrid electric vehicle \(PHEV\) engine, 2021\-2023 Edge/Nautilus vehicles equipped with a 2.7L EcoBoost, 2021\-2024 F\-150 vehicles equipped with a 2.7L EcoBoost, and 2021\-2024 Bronco and 2024 Ranger vehicles equipped with a 2.7L or 3.0L EcoBoost engine may exhibit a ticking/tapping or rattle type noise from the top front cover area of the engine. This noise may occur on initial start\-up after a cold soak of 6 hours or more that may last for 2\-5 seconds. This may be due to an internal component of the variable cam timing \(VCT\) unit. Workshop Manual \(WSM\), Section 303\-00 \> Diagnosis and Testing \> Engine \> Pinpoint Test F has been updated to include additional steps along with a video to identify the affected VCT unit that requires replacement.
- [TSB 25\-2395](/bulletins/11022395.md), 2025-09-03, Service bulletin: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM; ENGINE. This article supersedes TSB 24\-2345 to update the Service Procedure. Some of the vehicles listed in the Model statement above may exhibit an oil leak from the engine oil pan RTV seal. This may be due to a lack of RTV adhesion.

- [SSM 52476](/bulletins/10254138.md), 2024-05-03, Service bulletin: EQUIPMENT. All accessory stick\-on keyless entry keypads come with a wallet card containing the master code. If the accessory keypad was factory installed, this card will be placed in the glove box and should be handed to the vehicles owner during initial delivery. Unlike the integrated \(wired\) factory keypad, the accessory keypad master code cannot be retrieved from the vehicle using a diagnostic scan tool. If the wallet card for an accessory keypad is lost, follow these steps to recover the code. Dealer Key Code access is granted through the Dealer Program Enrollment System \(DPES\); dealership management can authorize users. The authorized user must go to FMCDealer.com \> Parts and Service \> Parts Product Line Information \> Keys/Entry Devices \> Aftermarket Keyless Entry Keypad Code Access. Follow the instructions on the screen to obtain the master code for the accessory keypad.
- [SSM 52335](/bulletins/10251952.md), 2024-03-20, Service bulletin: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. For 2015\-2024 Ford and Lincoln vehicles equipped with turbocharged engines and customer concern of an engine oil leak, refer to Workshop Manual \(WSM\), Section 303\-00 for oil leak inspection and testing methods. Ford has evaluated turbochargers replaced for oil leak symptoms and although oil may collect on the external surface of a turbocharger, it is extremely rare for a turbocharger assembly to be the root cause of the oil leak. Careful inspection of the turbocharger oil feed and drain tubes should be performed along with the recommended WSM procedures as needed. Warranty claims for turbocharger replacement going forward will be assessed.
- [TSB 23\-2356](/bulletins/10251455.md), 2024-03-07, Service bulletin: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. This TSB supersedes TSB 23\-2049 to update the parts list. Some 2019\-2023 Edge/Nautilus vehicles equipped with a 2.7L EcoBoost engine may exhibit a ticking/tapping or rattle type noise from the top front cover area of the engine on initial start\-up after a cold soak of 6 hours or more that may last for 2\-5 seconds. This may be due to stuck internal components of the variable cam timing \(VCT\) unit. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to replace the VCT units.
