# Service bulletin 02\-012\-16\-3181A

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

- NHTSA id: 10092577
- Published by NHTSA: 2017\-02\-23

- Manufacturer's date: 2016\-08\-30
- NHTSA component: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS

## NHTSA's summary

SOME VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE A TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM \(TPMS\) WARNING LIGHT ON WHEN DRIVING ON A SMOOTH ROAD SURFACE EVEN IF THE TPMS SYSTEM HAS BEEN PROPERLY INITIALIZED AT THE SPECIFIED TIRE AIR PRESSURE. THE TPMS SYSTEM MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY INITIALIZED WHEN THE INITIALIZATION WAS PERFORMED ON CERTAIN TYPES OF ROUGH ROAD SURFACES. THEN, WHEN DRIVEN ON SMOOTH ROAD SURFACES, THE TPMS SYSTEM MAY DETECT IMPROPER TIRE AIR PRESSURE. THE DSC HU/CM CONTROL LOGIC HAS BEEN CHANGED FOR THIS CONCERN.

## Other bulletins for the same vehicles and component

- [MT\-002\-20](/bulletins/10179228.md), 2020-09-02, Service bulletin: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS; WHEELS. New CARB regulation regarding mandatory checking and documenting of tire pressure whenever a vehicle is in for service work. This applies to all service shops \(including Mazda dealerships\) in California effective September 1, 2010.
- [MT\-010\-18](/bulletins/10152371.md), 2018-12-17, Service bulletin: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS. Some vehicles \(with MAZDA CONNECT\) may exhibit a condition where DTC U0323\(PCM\) / U0423\(ABS\) /U3000\(IC\) CANNOT be deleted when the TPMS warning light flashes and/or the TCS/DSC indicator lights are illuminated. This can happen if the ignition is turned OFF within 20 seconds after the ignition is turned ON in one of the following two situations. 1. The ?ROOM? fuse \(Engine compartment\) is NOT installed when battery level is low. 2. The CMU \(Connectivity Master Unit\) is NOT connected.
- [02\-011\-18\-3476](/bulletins/10142520.md), 2018-07-02, Service bulletin: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS. This service bulletin illustrates the conditions when a TPMS warning light may illuminate, why it illuminated and how to properly initialize the system. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System \(TPMS\) monitors the tire pressure of all four tires indirectly using the data sent from the ABS wheel speed sensors. If the air pressure of one or more tires is too low compared with the specified value \(the initial value learned by the system\), the system warns the driver with the TPMS warning light in the instrument cluster and a beep sound. To allow the TPMS to operate correctly, it is essential that the TPMS be initialized to learn new conditions whenever a tire related service is performed.
- [02\-009\-18\-3472](/bulletins/10142518.md), 2018-07-02, Service bulletin: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS. Customer complaints have been reported where the TPMS warning light is unnecessarily illuminated because the TPMS initialization was not performed correctly before customer delivery.TPMS INITIALIZATION PROCESS: When any of the services below is performed, BE SURE TO INITIALIZE THE TPMS BEFORE DRIVING THE VEHICLE by pushing and holding the TPMS Set Switch on the dash until the TPMS warning light flashes two times and the warning beep sounds once. The TPMS must be initialized in the following cases: 1. Tire pressures have been adjusted in one or more tires. 2. Tires have been rotated. 3. Tires or wheels have been replaced. 4. The vehicle's battery cable has been disconnected for any reason. 5. The vehicle's battery has been discharged. 6. The DSC HU/CM connector has been disconnected for any reason.

- [SA280](/bulletins/10091485.md), 2017-02-14, Service bulletin: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS. SOME VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE A TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM \(TPMS\) WARNING LIGHT IMPROPERLY ILLUMINATES WHEN DRIVING ON A SMOOTH ROAD SURFACE EVEN IF THE TPMS SYSTEM HAS BEEN PROPERLY INITIALIZED AT THE SPECIFIED TIRE AIR PRESSURE. PLEASE CONTACT THE HOTLINE FOR A COUNTERMEASURE REPAIR IF A VEHICLE ARRIVES WITH THIS ISSUE. A COUNTERMEASURE CONTROL MODULE IS DUE IN JULY FOR THIS CONCERN.
