Service bulletin 20-22

A bulletin is a manufacturer's communication to its dealers, as NHTSA indexes it. The summary is NHTSA's. The document is the manufacturer's: read it at NHTSA. A bulletin is not a recall, and listing a model year does not mean every vehicle of it is concerned.

NHTSA's summary

Premature Belt Wear on Cummins ISL Premature belt wear (fraying or shredding) may occur on some Western Star 4700 models equipped with EPA2013 ISL CM2250 or CM2350 engines with 492 mm high-mount engine fans. If all other troubleshooting has been exhausted, the belt wear may be related to the long belt span created by the high-mount fan pulley. Installing an idler pulley between the fan pulley and the crankshaft pulley will reduce belt vibration, resolving the complaint. A new and longer fan belt is required, as the addition of the idler pulley increases the belt length.
